I’m seeing these new being sold for under $40 these days and am
wondering if they are any good. IThe (low) price strikes me as VERY
low and concerns me that they’re crap. I’m trying to figure all this stuff
out and if you know of reviews or can share personal experiences
with this type of loco, I’d appreciate it.
Some swear by them and some swear at them. Biggest problem is quality control as is always the case with Bachmann. However, they are very good at replacing things under warranty…
i have 3
of the dcc equipped and for a beginer they really arent all that bad there is one in my signature. they respond well and dont sputter, running at slow speeds are also not to bad i use one for yard work if that tells u anything. but when it comes to detail ofcourse my atlas blows it away but for the price and the performance id say go for it i have yet to get hurt by them

The new Bachmann diesels w/DCC have been re-engineered mechanically and are better than previous issues. Their GP35 isn’t especially well detailed but can be improved as you see fit. If you want something better I would recommend the Athearn RTR GP35 if it comes in the road name you want. It has a DCC plug (no decoder) and is much better in the detail department. You should be able to find one in the $50-$60 range.
I bought two at a show in January for $29.99 each. One is a GP35 and the other is a GP40. So far they are working fine. I have two more on order.
For the money and for someone just getting into the hobby like myself, I think they are a petty good deal. It’s an inexpensive way to get your railroad going.
