Anyone install a decoder in this loco? Is it a straight forward plug-in once dummy plug is removed or does one have to remove capacitors C1, C2 from circuit to prevent overspeed as in some Bachmanns? Any recommended decoders?
Thanks, Jon

These might help.
loathar,
I’m glad I have HO scale, that N Scale procedure(at least for me) looks like a pain in the lower entremities. Does look like the Bachmann “capacitor problem” isn’t a problem.
I’m looking for decoder that will clear tender deck and be able to do so using 8 pin plug-in on existing board.
Thanks for links,
Jon
Ooops![:I] I didn’t know they made an HO version. The only things that came up in Google were N.
I sure thought you’d have gotten more answers here by now. I’m installing a tsunami in mine right now, but hit a snag. The deep base speaker I bought is a tad too deep actually to fit under the coal load so Monday I’ll order a couple slimmer speakers to fire down through the floor. The floor is a casting to my surprise so as I drill out some weight to let the sounnd out, I’ll probably add some make-up weight under the coal load or somewhere. I cut out the original pc board in the tender but I had a notion to plug in a TSC DP5X decoder in response to your question. The C1 and C2’s were both right there and I could have cut them out as my other bachmann’s but went straight to hard wiring in the tsunami. Looking at the pc board right now both c1 and c2 are wired right together so if you cut one the other one is out of the picture. But this engine has another pc board in the engine right above the ashpan, don’t know what it does but I want to take it out only I can’t figure out how to get the shell off. If you go to tscdcc.com you can see some Train Control Systems info and pictures of their decoder installs and recommendations. From what I saw I think it would have been plug and play and cut one C1 and put the tender shell back on. Hope this helps.
Gary, is there any way you would consider mounting the larger (better) speaker at an angle and hold it thusly using a tubular retainer/baffle? The speakers in the tender of my Lionel Challenger are mounted that way, and boy do they sound great. So, you’d still get the sound you had intended, but you’ll just not be able to mount the speaker flush. Tilt it about 20 degrees, if that is doable inside the volume you have available, and try that.
I used that 123 decoder and just plug and play
watch for pinch wire when closing tender there thin
good point Selector, I’ll play around and just see if I can’t. I know I can do one speaker that way, but the coal bunker of the tender actually protrudes down into the tender almost like the real thing I think, and why I don’t know. I could keep the deep base speaker in the back of the tender facing down through the floor or I could even maybe shave some material off the coal load and have it facing upward. Then again might be able to do two deep base speakers firing down if I cut out some of the slope sheet, the part hidden under the coal load anyway. then rtv the coal load back into place. that might just work. I also moments ago saw (on the engine drawing) the one screw that holds the shell on and that made me feel a whole lot better. Thanks.
As in DH123something?
