Apparently it does have a sound system in the tender, although I know nothing about how effective it might be. Hornby once offered a loco with sound generator (back in their Triang days) that simply had a cam on one tender axle that would rub on a piece of sandpaper to create what has been described as “a rasping “chuff” noise”. I think it’s been re-released more recently, the loco is an LNER B12 4-6-0. Just mentioning it as an example of how basic some of the early sound effects were!

IIRC the ‘Texas Chugger’ was a ATSF 2-10-4 - Looked good, but ran poor. Was out for only 2-3 years.

The Texas Chugger was an ATSF 2-10-4 with a NYC 4-10 pedestal coal tender! The proper tender for that loco has an oil bunker and two eight wheel trucks, same as the one that came with the old Bachmann ATSF 4-8-4.
My Texas Chugger will be roundhouse scenery if I ever build an engine terminal diorama for my US prototype steam, with the proper tender. That NYC tender will be used behind a non-powered (cheap plastic kit) J-3 Hudson.
IT Is a Bachmann ATSF 4-8-4 shell, on a 2-10-4 wheelbase, pulling a NYC tender, painted for Chesapeak & Ohio.
The Bachmann chassis was prone to wheels locking up on it’s axles. Sound was produced rubbing a 'sandpaper ’ stick inserted in the tender.
As long as it will run, Enjoy. When it stops, build a park aound it.

Save up your money. Rumor has it Bachmann will retool the shell and put a decent drive drive under it. Their AT&SF Tender we don’t know.
Perhaps BOWSER will have a 4-8-4 chassis that will fit.

Only Bachmann could sell the 5011 series with a NYC centepede tender and believe it was a real Texas Chugger using a wood device in the tender.
I did purchase the 4-8-4 3776 class version from Bachmann and used them for park and roundhouse duty, but only after installing brake shoes and roller bearing side rods. .
I hope the new version of the 5011 Texas uses the correct tender that they already had in their inventory.
How about this, since the PRR leased a few of the 5011 class back in the summer of 1956, Bachmann could use their poetic license rule and offer the new Texas type as a J1b. Now before you say anything, I lived near the PRR in steam days and know they only classified their Texas type as the J1 and J1a.
