Bachmann Metroliner

How do you get the shell off the body?

HO scale or N?

Welcome to the Forum! [:D] [tup]

Hi, I’ve got 7 of the HO Metros, both types (early version with metal pantographs and underframe and.the later version with plastic pantographs, plastic underframe and talgo trucks.

There is one screw on each end mounted into the underframe just above the axle closest to the coupler on each end of the railcar. Remove the couplers on the Talgo version. On both versions, take out the screw, carefully spread the body with the tips of your fingers slowly sliding between the shell and underframe. The underframe should slip out.

Here are a couple of Metroliners that I metalized last year. I’ve been working on my layout but plan on finishing these Metros into Penn Central before this summer.

What are you planning to do to your Metroliners?

HO

I have 2 power units and 4 dummy cars, all are early type. I obtained them over the the past year at shows and one-bay

Thanks for you help

Just curious, are you going to detail or modify them?

Another issue is the drive, which isn’t that great. I’m considering installing a “Bull Ant” powered truck if I’m not able to find a suitable replacement setup from Proto Power West.

The wheels are another issue since they have those deep “Pizza-cutter” flanges which may have issues on Code 83 track.

I’ll tackle the power issues once I finish metalizing and decaling the bodies. Six will be in Penn Central and one will be in Pennsy. For “cool effects” I hope to install 3 LED lights on the power car’s headlight space on the top, with the center light as a Gyra (like the prototype). Also plan on using LEDs to light up the interiors in all of them.

My plan was to try and lubricate the gears and the trucks, but the is getting to be a larger job by the day

I have 12 metroliners. When I was a teenager I kitbashed a GE- Rebuilt Metroliner set painted in phase III Amtrak colors complete with Roof resistor Blisters and Marklin Pantographs. The set featured two power cars so, it was extra Fast and it ran off the wire. It also had a kitbashed club car. I have not ran it in 4 years hopefully it still works

I don’t know if you have considered the power trucks from The Coach Yard: http://www.walthers.com/exec/productinfo/224-9

I have heard good things about them, and they claim that they are DCC compatible (I don’t know if that statement amounts to a whole lot). I wonder if they would even look right?

ACCatenary, very nice! Would enjoy seeing some close up photos of your units. If you have a vid camera, a video clip on YouTube would be a real treat. [;)]

Smitty! Always good to see you posting. [8D][tup]

I considered that truck but the problem is that, based on my measurements, the low ceiling of the Metro shell doesn’t allow sufficient clearance for that truck motor. If only it were “just a tad” shorter in height.

I think that it was forum member, Mark Pierce, that posted info about the Bull Ant. http://www.hollywoodfoundry.com/

Heres a GE rebuilt metroliner video I just posted on Youtube… This train is incredibly fast with two power cars… TOO fast
