Bachmann N-scale 2-6-6-2 Steam Loco

I have recently purchased a Bachmann N-scale 2-6-6-2 Steam Loco.

Attempted to run it on my pike however it would not stay on the track so I checked the wheel gage and found every wheel was out of gage.
I corrected the wheel gage problem only to find when attempting again to run the unit that the connecting rods now hit on the valve gear on both sets of drivers and on both sides.

This is a beautiful loco (and will run on Atlas Code 55 Track if the Connecting rods would clear the valve gear) but I want it to operate correctly.

The reviews that I have read (prior to making the purchase) indicated that the Locomotive’s wheels conform to the NMRA standards but the one that I purchased did not (spacing was way to tight).

In doing a web search I discovered that I am not alone with this problem, however I did not see any fix.

Is Bachmann aware that they have a problem with these Locomotives?

What are my options, the unit was purchased while I was in California about 3 weeks ago and I live in the Midwest so returning it to the hobby shop were I purchased it would not be very easy and it was the last one that they had.

You should call the Bachmann customer service. They will advise you on how to send the loco back. They may be able to return one that has been fixed. THe problem you encountered has been common on the first release.

Bachmann locos can be ggod but you need to be aware to try it before you buy it. A good one will be a very fine locomotive.

I agree. If the cure isn’t immediately apparent, but more importantly, if it voids your warranty, ask them to take it back for an exchange or a repair. I’m pretty sure they’ll come good. means a thre-to-four week down time, but you’ll be glad you did it.

Thanks for the help.
I contacted Bachmann and they said to send the loco to them and they would repair or replace it.
I will be sending it out tomorrow.

I’ve dealt with Bachmann in the past, and although their products do show occasional flaws, their service dept. is excellent.Just wanted to say this…
