Bachmann Norfolk and Western ho, j-class, 600 series with smoke

Do any of you out there know where i would be able to get parts for my N&W or get it fixed? the gear on the axle that connects with the motor gear does not work, and it makes a loud annoying noise, i might also need to find more replacement gears because it appears to also be broken. It would be great if any of you know any places.

thanks…

First, I would not volunteer any personal info such as an email, address or phone # for yourself open here on the forum. You can have private conversations with people who you then send such info to.

Second, Bachmann is supposed to have the best service and warrantee shop available in the hobby.

They are in Philly, PA, USA.

If you have a problem, they can: fix it or replace it if under warrantee; repair it if not and even if you broke it, or “worked on it first”.

I would try contacting them and sending it to them to fix.

Here is the ifo from their website bachmanntrains.com:

Bachmann's Lifetime Limited Warranty covers motorized units only. Under the warranty, Bachmann can decide whether to repair or replace an item at their discretion.

Items less than a year old are fully covered and will be serviced or replaced at no charge when accompanied with warranty card or proof of purchase.

For items more than one year old, there is a nominal service charge for repair or replacement (prices subject to change):

I have already gone to Bachmann and they said my train was to old and not made anymore, so i need to find a parts train, The email i show to people is ONLY used for trains and this website,

Thanks for the reply

I’ve had good & bad luck with this model for a while now. I first picked one up on Ebay; it ran once, then stopped. I sent it to Bachmann in Pennsylvania, & they replaced it with an upgrade to the Spectrum - and even though I had done a repaint on the body. They apologized that the upgrade didn’t have smoke (I had smoke? Wow.) but it had sound. Cool.

I eagerly put it on my track; posed it for a few beauty shots, ran it around twice, this time, then it stopped. It wouldn’t stay on the track anymore, either. I’m going to send it back again, one of these days. Or maybe get the Bowser insert, I don’t know.

Bachmann now sells parts to most of their models. If you still can’t find what you need, then look for a junker on E-bay.

Did your new spectrum model fall off the track? sadly, that is just what happened to my replacement of the 600, it was running around a 22 inch curve and just stopped, and started to roll and before i could run over it fell, and smashed on the floor, to my surprise it was not badly damaged, only 2 windows came out and the wheels tp the back truck. I would love to get another 600,

Thank you for your reply, [:)]

My ‘J’ didn’t crash, there weren’t even any bumps or derailments. It just stopped. I did find a tiny screw on the track when I lifted it off but couldn’t see where it had come from. It ran backwards - only - fine for a little while, then that stopped, too. Now I can’t get the rear four on the track at the same time as the drive eight.

Damn shame; it’s a beautiful engine, to look at, which is all i’ve been able to do with it.

Does it sill run? What parts do you think it needs?

Cuda Ken

The motor works, so does the smoke unit, but i need to replace 1 or 2 gears, the one gear that i think is on the axle cracked in half and broke off so i need that replaced, and i have not yet found out what other gear broke.

This is what mine looked like, while it was running…

Your best bet is to fill out the repair form Bachmann provides on their website, follow their instructions and then send it to them for repair.

I have had good luck with them in the past with several small steamers that belong to my oldest grandson. A few have been replaced at no cost.

The drive train used in the NW 4-8-4s is essentially the same as used in the Js and Niagara’s. There should be parts available for it. If I get a chance I’ll see if I can find the parts diagram for ours and post a copy here.

I have several of the large Bachmann steamers, all but one converted to DCC, and have had very few problems with them.

Don’t give up on your model yet.
