Bachmann On30 4-4-0...what is the prototype?

I ordered one of these and it came in the mail today. When I unpacked it I was surprized at how small it is. When I put it with my Bachmann 2-6-0 and 2-8-0 it almost looked out of scale. Also pulling my Bachmann rolling stock it just looks too small. Is it a model of a 3 foot gauge loco? It runs great is very well detailed but if I had known it was so small I may have passed. I looked for prototypr info but Bachmann has nothing…any ideas???

It is a Mt. Gretna two foot gauge locomotive. It’s main problem is it had 33" drivers which makes it look even smaller. It looks better with larger drivers.

Bowser Trains 69" drivers.

I couldn’t understand Bachmann picking a prototype that is so much smaller than their rolling stock.

Thanks for the info…wish I had caught the info before I’d bought…don’t know what I am going to do with it now…does not really kit with my C-16’s and 2-8-0 etc…oh well…I’ll find out the info better next time.

Harold, I hate to disagree with you, but it is not the Mt. Gretna engine - look at the driver spacing and domes. Per a conversation I had with Lee Riley at Rosemont, this is a catalog Baldwin, not based on any specific prototype.

I like the look of the engine with the larger drivers!

Hate to disagree with the man who “made” it. But it is close enough to be it’s ugly twin.

It is the Mt. Gretna engine with a sandbox. And it is NOT a Baldwin or Porter catalog loco.

That Mt. Gretna engine was one ugly little bug, wasn’t it?

The biggest visual difference to me (besides the dome) is the driver spacing - the Bachmann engine has much more pleasing proportions IMO. But it does look a heck of a lot more typical (and better!) with the higher drivers - much closer to an idealized 4-4-0 for me.

Do you think you’ll be doing a full conversion article on your website? I forecast Bowser is going to have a run on drivers!
