I agree with Scott. The video might give a comparison of the Climax along side the Shay by Bachmann

I have both the Climax and the Shay. Both run and look terrific. But I have to admit that I like the fact that both sides of the Climax look great – with a Shay, the left side doesn’t do much for me!

I have owned this Climax since before Christmas. Two models tested on track at the store ran jerkily as well. I noticed that the sliding connector shaft had come apart. I carefully realigned the two parts, put it on the track and voila! It ran perfectly. I’ve had some difficulty with the tsunami in operation pulling a load with a Digitrax Zephyr power pack and anything more than three cars. I ascribe this to too little amperage available with that pack

I got the non-sound version and it ran smoothly right out of the box at all speeds!

Good review. Just received the undecorated model of the climax this week and it made its first run on the layout. It was all the review says it is. It is an excellent runner at slow speed after a very short break in time. A video would be a good demonstratiion of the smooth running mechanism and its sound.

I have the shay for several years and it has performed realistically and reliably throughout that time. I look forward to adding the Climax to my roster of locomotives! Thanks for the informative review, as usual.

I look forward to the video, also

Good review Dana! I have this little gem and really am enjoying it. Ran a little jerky at first, as you noted, but after a little break-in runs just fine. Also, had to re-install the drive shaft in two places as it had somehow gotten disconnected. Love the sound which seems pretty accurate. Goes great with my shay. Really appreciate your reviews, both in the mag. and on-line.

Overall, a good review; thanks Dana.
I do, however, have a couple of nits to pick.
The model is not identified as being from Bachmann’s Spectrum line. I just think it should be, that’s all. For one thing, it makes it easier to find on Bachmann’s web site.
The MSRP listed in the review is not the same as that on the web site. $495 vs. $535. Maybe it changed recently.
That’s all. Thanks for an informative and interesting review.

I’m ordering one today. Thank you for the much needed info !

A truly excellent model. I too had also changed CV’s 2and 116, to the values,as described by the author. She runs like a dream. I am very proud to the owner of one of the first of two to land in South Africa. The other one is owned by a fellow Club member (EMRIC). Welldone Bachmann!!!.
