I just got this set and am please with the product. I had to glue some peices that feel off during shipping but overall not bad. Does anyone know if the coal tender light is suppose to turn on when the train goes backwards?

The light on the tender of my annie comes on when the train goes backwards. First thing, are the connectors to the engine on the proper sides? Second, do you get the chuff sound? Those would be my first things to look at before digging deeper anyway.

Hi Jack, The tender light doesn’t not come on when the train goes backwards. There are two connectors on the back of the engine that I hooked up to. I do get the chuff sound but if I reverse the two connection I get no sound so they should be correctly connected. It looks like there is a light inside the coal tender I just need to confirm whether or not this annie should light up or not. BTW, what are the two wire connection for (one for sound activation and the other the light)?
The second one is power to the light.
You should see if you’re getting power to that plug.
I’m assuming it doesn’t light up when the engine is going forward.
The front engine light works fine when going forward. When going backwards the coal tender light doesn’t come on. I’ll put a low volt tester on it to see if we are getting power out the rear right connector on the engine.
If this engine is from a set I’ll bet the reason it doesnt come on is because its not an Annie, but a Big Hauler, one step down from the Annie. If the engine came from a set bet ya a nickle its not an Annie and may even be an earlier BH incarnation, that would explain why theres no reverse light. If it has plastic driverods then its definetly a Big Hauler. If its a later BH and there an actual light bulb inside the rear headlight, then further testing is warrented, could be a bad wire or connection.
Hi Tomas, a lot of the cheaper Bachman engines are not wired for reverse light . You can buy the bulb and canble plus a connetor from any good repair dealer or contact direct in US or UK
I have a call & email into Bachmann to confirm whether or not the coal tender light on my Wonderful Flyer set should turn on when in reverse. There are two seperate connectors coming off the coal tender that hook up to the engine. One for sound and the other I assume is for the light. I will let you know once I hear back from Bachmann.

You mention that it’s a Wonderland Flyer Set. If it’s a 2007 set the set number will be 90047.
If a set #90047 then the locomotive is the Anniversary edition and should have a working backup light on the tender.
For general information. Bachmann offered two sets this year that contain Anniversary edition locomotives. Those sets are, as mentioned, Wonderland Flyer set #90047 and a White Pass & Yukon passenger set #90059. So, no longer can we say that Bachmann does not use the Anniversary locomotive in sets. They are offering at least two at this time.
All Bachmann 10-Wheelers are Big Haulers. There’s the “standard” Big Hauler that has been offered since the 10-Wheeler was first introduced and the Anniversary 10-Wheeler.
If you have power at the plug receptical at the back of the locomotive then the next step is to look inside the tender. There should be two wires that run from the power plug on the back of the locomotive to the backup light. It’s possible that one of these wires has come loose. Or, the bulb may be burned out/defective.
Well that picture in the link sure looks like a standard Big Hauler with the plastic siderods and no valvegear, but be that as it may…if it IS an Annie, then the wiring inside would be prime suspect, a little dissassembly may be needed.
If you’ve got 2 seperate connections for wire make sure your getting power to the one that’s not the chuff and if so take the tender shell off and check the wiring to the light.

I just received and set up the Wonderland Flyer Train set from Bachmann ordered through Frontgate. My coal tender light works only when running backward. Seems to make sense since the light is pointing that way.
