back from the Y

In my previous post I described the trains on the Main Line, which also covered teh Florida trains and the St. Louis/Louisville trains. In addition to the Chickasaw, the St. Louis line to Duquoin and on to Carbondale also had sections of the City of New Orleans, City of Miami, and Panama Limited. Actually the City of New Orleans and City of Miami ran on the same train…#201.

  1. The Chicago to St. Louis line saw three trains each way. These train ran down the Mainline to Gilman then to the crew change at Clinton, Il and then thru Springfield to St. Louis. These trains were The Green Diamond, The Night Diamond, and the Daylight. Southbound the Night Diamond carried sleepers while the Green Diamond and Daylight had coaches, diners, and parlor cars.

  2. There were a couple of east - west lines.

From Chicago, three trains headed west daily. Number 15 and it’s counterpart 16 ran between Chciago and Freeport, Il. The 113 miles were covered in 3 hours…west in the morning and return in the evening. The Land O’Corn left Waterloo at 645am and arrived in Chicago at 1215pm, leaving at 515pm and arriving at 1055pm. The Land 'O Corn’s westbound diner was taken off at Freeport and returned the next morning at 515am on the eastbound Hawkeye.

The Hawkeye ran between Chicago and Sioux City with sleepers between Chicago and Sioux City and Chicago and Waterloo.

  1. Trains 205 and 226, The Southwestern and Northeastern Limiteds ran between Shreveport and Meridian with sleepers to and from New York. Coaches and cafe lounges also were on the train.

One more train ran on the system…#23/24 between Memphis and Greenville. These trains were The Delta Express and was a local which left Memphis at 845am making all stops (including Alligator, Ms), arriving at Greenville at 115pm then returning to Memphis, arrival at 615pm. These trains were diesel powered(Geep7/9’s???) and carried only coaches.
