Back issues of Model Railroader Magazine

Hello all, sorry to invade on your board, since I am a Lionel guy, but if anyone can help, please contact me, I need the March 1990 Issue of Model Railroader magazine.

Thanks

Mark

You can buy copies direct from MR, or they will do photocopies of out of print articles for you. There is also a firm that sells back issues - Railpub, find them through a Google search.

Everyone I found so far is out of that issue.March 1990

I will keep looking, and if anyone has one they would like to sell, let me know

March of 1990 has George Sellios’ Franklin and South Manchester railroad on the cover along with an article about it. I have one but due to the cover and FSM article I will not part with it. Maybe that is why you may be having problems finding one. You may want to try eBay. Currently there is a whole 1990 set on sale. Here is a link to it: http://tinyurl.com/k7urf

Hi There;

Is there a paticular article you are looking for ? I have almost 50years of MR. I could scan an article & email it to you.

Tom

I am actually looking for The story and Layout plans of Jeff Maddens Layout from 1990

Guys,

The question of scanning back issues (or stories from back issues) for someone else comes up from time to time. Doing so is a violation of copyright law, and since we’ll photocopy any article from MR’s history for a small fee, it’s also unnecessary. You’re free to scan or copy articles for your own personal use, but not to distribute, whether that’s on paper, via e-mail, or by posting them online.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation, and most of all thanks for reading MR.

Sincerely,
Terry Thompson

I just took that issue (along with 100+ others) over to our train club. If I find that someone hasn’t taken it home already, I’ll grab it tomorrow and contact you via email and send it to you. You can buy me a beer the next time you’re out in West Texas.

Thanks!! I will buy you a beer, or send ya an official FDNY hat

Mark

Sir

I and some others on the forum would REALLY like to see Kalmbach offer scanned digital copies of back issues for purchase, especially since under the guidelines you correctly outlined above, each of us would have to scan our own personal copies to achieve the same result.

In my situation, I am faced with disposing of my entire collection of MR because it’s too heavy and takes up too much space to make my next move. My collection includes most of the '50s, continuous from '62 to '95 and from '03 to present. The storage costs alone (not counting transport) are $30 per month. With the rapidly declining value of old issues - now worth about 25 cents each, if that - it quickly becomes cheaper for me to throw them out, and rebuy at the other end of the move. The problem is that my wife is not going to stand for rebuying that large a collection of old magazines to take up space in the house. Plus, finding the article I want in that large a collection is very time-consuming (although pleasurable).

Please reconsider your refusal to provide this service. Storage of a few DVD discs, even one or several DVDs per year of back issues, is much more palatable to the non-model railroaders in the family. Plus, you can resell the same content to me again in another format. And I guarantee you more success in selling back issue DVD packages to me than repackaging article

I love the idea of electronic copies to be made available, but I also know based on what I’ve learned from other companies that this is usually not an option.

The problem is that the contracts with the authors, etc. often do not permit republishing in different mediums, or at all. This is also often limited to a certain time span (like 5 or 10 years) and cannot be republished past that time. I do realize that MR does republish some articles electronically, as well as in their books, but I don’t know if they have to recontract for that or if the more recent contracts allow for this possibility. These types of restrictions may be more likely in the types of articles that are more helpful 40 years later - like scale drawings, etc. I’m sure the editors can expand on this as well, but it is frequently a factor in other magazines. The issue here is that the contracts allow for printing in a limited-time format (one issue of a monthly magazine) rather than a perpetual publishing schedule (such as a book or electronic medium).

Of course, the other aspect is simply the cost of scanning and republishing electronically. While the storage is relatively cheap, and the newer issues are probably in an electronic form already, scanning the older magazines in the hope that enough people will purchase a specific issue to recoup the costs. They don’t necessarily have to make a sale on every issue, provided the combined sales are high enough on all electronic copies are high enough to cover the costs and make a profit.

The last sticking point is the reverse of the first. The advertisers would be happy to have their ads republished for free, but a great amount of the operating costs and profits of a magazine come from its advertising sales. From their perspective, they would be entitled to negotiate a different contract for publishing an ad in both print and electronically. The advertisers can (and probably would) refuse to pay extra, but it would also be very expensive to remove the ads from the electronic

You should try your local public library. Most public libraries have collections of MR and other magazines for reference. When you find the article you want, make a copy of it for yourself.

Whew…after rumaging through hundreds of different RR mags over the past 8 days at our clubhouse, I finally found MR 3-90. Advise via email where you’d like it sent.

Just a suggestion: If you go into MRR you can look at it online. Just the big topics.

Terry, I’m glad you came out and said this. I’ve scanned my favorite articles from 8 - 10 years worth of magazines for myself. I didn’t know what the management at MR thought about such things. Common sense tells me it’s fine to do, whatever the legal details actually are. I would not distribute them, etc., but let me tell you, I have the coolest collection of my favorite articles on the computer I’m using to type this.

It makes for a great break in the middle of a workday, etc. As I take a break… “Now I’m going to browse through all of my David Barrow articles, nicely organized in one directory…”, or, “I think I’m going to look at all the small track plan articles for some inspiration…”

It’s great!

I do think it would be cool if MR had all the issues on a couple DVD’s, but since I’m trying to aquire less posessions in life, and not more, I’ve accepted the fact that I won’t be able to own everything I’d like to have, even if it is just information, like great magazine articles. There is just too much good stuff out there to try to wrap your arms around all of it.
