I am looking to buy some backorders of MR. I am looking for some that have a lot of good steam info in them. I am looking for one that has a lot of steam service areas. Also If there are some good one on the C&O steam, they seam to have awsome steam loco’s. I also am looking for some MR with grain modeling in them. I am looking for modern grain. ALso if there are some good MR’s on steam coal drags.
At the risk of sounding somewhat prehistoric, some public libraries carry hobby magazines and browsing through them and keeping notes of what issues you want for yourself can sometimes produce results that even a thorough review of the website index cannot match.
Some libraries sell off magazines after a year or two on the shelf and I have picked up stacks of Model Railroaders for as little as ten cents a copy at library book sales.
Check out the grain elevator pictures on this website:
If it is C&O you are interested, start saving your money now and seek out a used book dealer who has a copy of this tremendous book:
SHUSTER, PHILIP & EUGENE HUDDLESTON, ALVIN STAUFER C&O Power: Steam and Diesel Locomotives of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway 1900-1965
Medina, OH, Alvin Staufer, Publisher. 1965. Hardcover. An accurate record of the C&O’s motive power. 351 pages of locomotive photographs and statistics.
I would expect to pay between $80 and $100 for this book.
Here is another source for you: www.cohs.org/ It is the C&O historical society, which is one of the better organizations of its type. They publish a very informative magazine and may have some back issues available. They have a lot online also.
You may want to check to see if they have any books that focus on your subjects of interest. Often these are compilations of back issues and might be a nice way to get the info you want.
The book “The Model Railroader’s Guide to Locomotive Servicing Terminals” by Marty McGuirk comes to mind. I have not read it myself, so you may want to look for reviews on Amazon or what not. If I recall, the biggest complaint was it focused too much on steam… not a problem for you.
Also… they have a book entirely on coal railroading. I don’t know anything about this book other then it exists.
