I just found out that my walthers/shinohara code 83 #4 turnouts is backordered to 12-Oct-2005. This is bizarre. I have already waited for these several month.
Please, point me to a store that have them in stock and can ship to Sweden.
Keep in mind most stock on hand will be ‘power routing’ type, and factory back ordered merchandise will probably be all ‘DCC friendly’ type. (Dead frog vs. Live frog).
not a problem, if you repect their different wiring need’s.
I’d also check Std Hobby Supply, if you haven’t already.
I have decided the Walthers/shinohara DCC friendly turnouts are a bust … don’t bother.
They are usually out of stock and are a pain to find by beating the bushes and contacting hobby shops.
It borders on false advertising on the part of Walthers. I’ve been trying to find these turnouts for the better part of a year and they are constantly out of stock.
Peco American turnouts cost more, but hey, you can get them. Real turnouts are much better than promises. The worst thing you can do is plan a layout construction project around using Walthers/Shinohara DCC friendly turnouts. [B)]
I use Peco medium radius turnouts, My Class J loves them and the PK2 2-8-8-2 just as smooth as glass thru 'em can’t go wrong. 6 axle diesel no worries.
The #6 turnouts seem to have a little better availability than the #4s, but it can certainly be irritating to have to wait.
Being out of such a popular switch in any of the commonly used sizes (4 or 6, left or right) is really inexcusable. That would be like an auto parts store being out of spark plugs, or Home Depot out of wallboard.
Seems Walthers needs to have a serious talk with their inventory management people about their hob performance…
You and I are older then dirt and have been in the hobby for a gazillion years, It doesn’t matter to me wheather it’a a DCC friendly switch or not I (we, you and me) just wire up whatever we’ve got and move on.
It does seem a tad bit unfortunate that Walthers has fallen so far behind on production of the code 83 stuff. Makes me wonder how they will manage Life -Like??? Walthers has been out of stock - backordered at the factory on the code 83 since May as far as I can tell. Try Microengineering for #6’s…
I need one curved #8 that I’m sure I won’t see until November at this rate…
I’ve been waiting two months now. The website says 21 July, so we will see (that’s THIS week). Had I know before, I would of went with Peco and removed the spring. Live and learn I guess.
What is wrong with the Atlas line? Easy to get and with some bench time and an NMRA gauge they work fine. I designed around the Phantom Track system (Walthers Code 83) and hve NEVER got the 1st piece I ordered. I got Atlas about anyplace.
the real killer was (5) #6 Double Crossovers from Walthers that YOU CAN NOT GET I had to redsign to allow for the extra room. I wish I had the eyes and the talent to hand lay my track!!
I bow down to people like John Allen who did it all in the 50’s when DCC was a misspelled word for DC.

I have NEVER had good luck with Atlas switches, so I simply stopped trying — some 30 years ago now.
Thery’ve probably improved over time, and would be fine now. But the spectre of every other car in the train derailing on (undoubtable poorly-laid) Atlas switches left a permanent bad taste in my mouth.
I take some pains to lay good trackwork now, but I’m still slightly surprised when a twenty-plus car train rolls through a new switch and doesn’t put wheels onto ties.
