As some of you know I rebuilt my old woodshed to my new train room. A building roughly the size of 1224 feet inside the room. Well, now my wife have gone insane. So my hobby budget will be gone for a while. The insanity has manifested it self in me being allowed to expand the train room, first with a expansion of a work area of 158 feet. And then, next spring(if I can raise the cash which is a bit of an issue since I’m still got three terms left until I’m done with my teachers education) with a whopping 30*15 feet as layout area.
Clearly the wife’s insanity is a terrible thing! But to ad insult to injury, the beaurocrats at the county who handles planning and building permits just gave me the Go ahead as well. So now I can start to plan for the next step in my layout plans.
So, would I be able to build a decent Cheyenne yard in such a space?
But where is the world going to, have anyone seen three riders lately, one on a pale horse perhaps? Because these things just don’t happen. The world must be coming to an end when wife agrees to this and the bureaucrats don’t mind either!
Well I don’t know if the world is ending soon but from my personal perspective the sooner the better. I know where I am going and it will be a far far better place! Who knows I may even be in charge of real trains there.

Well, my friend I am sure there are lots of model railroaders (including me) who have their eye on doing something like that.
Maybe you haven’t been married long enough to realize that wives do occasionally do things like this. Sometimes there is an ulterior motive and some times they just want to nice. AS for the beaurocrats, why should they mind (especially when it could lead to you paying higher real estate taxes)?
On the other hand budgetary constraints are a fact of life or all of us would have nothing but brass locomotives and rolling stock, not to mention state size layouts.
The “wife” and I have been together since 98 so I’m fairly confident in this marriage thingy. It does of course mean that I have to give her some extra attention(and MONEY) to keep her satisfied. But I think she mainly lets me do this since she has accepted my insanity.
On the topic of bureaucrats, at first they wanted a special permit that would have cost me just 2000$ for that alone. The thing I meant with flexible is that she explained a way for me to get away from any permits what so ever. What I will do is basically ad to the existing train room in small parts. If I do that I don’t need a permit. Of course, as soon as one part is “finished” I can start the next. That allows me for a very low cost do this without permits and so on. Pretty nice huh?! Building it in steps actually suits me just fine since all I got is the student allowance I get for being at the university which isn’t much as you probably can understand. My wife is currently without a job so the money is the BIG issue with this. I have to be realistic and say that I probably won’t be able to finish the whole thing next year but that it will probably drag on in to the year after that. But I got plenty of things to do in my current layout room. I thought I would be happy with that but so much space was eaten up by the Helix and the workshop that I was left with a feeling of wanting Moore.
