Baghdad Railroad Center

So I was poking around Google Earth (4.0 is awesme btw), and I found this.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Baghdad&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=33.332321,44.368157&spn=0.006588,0.014784&t=k&om=1

I also found a ton if military bases…(imagine that). The downloadable version of Google Earth is great, and I think there is a way to share the bookmarks, but I haven’t quite figured that out yet.

That’s a pretty nice aerial shot. I was deployed to Iraq in 2004 and although I never saw any trains, I could hear them sometimes while in the Green Zone. Just for a moment, I’d picture myself back stateside somewhere next to the rails when I heard their whistle.

You’re right on the bases…there are many, many scattered throughout the country and will be for the forseable future until we can start drawing down some troop levels.

I have deployed to middle east about 8 times in the past 18 years now. I was in shock myself to see a train line running Iraq down towards U.A.E. I hope to be able to get some photos next ime I get back to Iraq. I would like to get some close ups if possible. Just have to keep an eye out for the terrorist.

We haven’t heard from a former editor in quite a while. Do you suppose he might be able to shed some more light on this subject?

I was under the impression when I read that article that after the last one he would not go back …There were 2 articles if I remember correctly(some one correct me if Im not) that came out in seperate issues…Danny

Cool pic tho…

The July 2004 issue of TRAINS had the article about the Iraq Railway. Also, there are lots of previous posts about the railway available by forum search. There may have been other articles, but for the most part, I just look at the pretty pictures. [:)]

I have a rail station sign from Fallujah. I don’t know where the line was going (to busy with crazy Hajji and his IED’s) but I think it was to connect to Syria.
