I was in Kirkwood today, and saw the dumbest person of my life.
Train I-DULA (Dupo- Las Angles Intermodal) was moving at about 35-40 MPH with 2 SD70M’s and a NS C40-9 Standard cab. Just as the train was about 50 feet from the crossing, a 13 year old boy runs out IN FRONT OF THE TRAIN. This scared the crew as the engineer laid back on the horn and completly violated the noise ordinance in the city of kirkwood. I got the whole thing on video.
I called the Kirkwood Police department, and several of the passengers at the Kirkwood Depot prevented him from leaving the scene. Union Pacific Police and Kirkwood Police both issued tickets, and the UP police spoke to the kid for about 45 minutes. The only way he got to leave was when the boys mom, who had to leave work to go pick him up from the station.
Tickets issued:
Trespassing (By UP, $50.00)
Crossing Tracks when train is coming (By Kirkwood PD, $250.00)
Can somebody say this kid is going to be grounded?
Well, I’m sure the 13 year old got a seiver (spelling) toung lashing from his parents and the police. I hope he’s learned his lesson. Next time he’ll actually think before he goes jumping out infront of oncomming trains. At least no one was hurt here, we don’t need anymore Thanksgiving accidents.
Jim: I often wish our St. Louis office would set video cameras in its windows down the line in Webster Groves (Lockwood near Oak). See this with frightening regularity when there. …and I bet OLI will volunteer to make a presentation at the kid’s school and the school will refuse the offer.
Yeah, you work at rhe North Shore Scenic Railroad right? I was there this summer on a trip with my dad and his friend. We took a break from railfanning the DMIR (awesome railroad) and came to see your fine establishment, got to ride on a train pulled by a SWEET GP30- my dads friend is an avid SOO LINE fan so he loved that!!! Great Muesam, we hope to come back!!!
The only time i was ever within 2 feet of the tracks was when i was 2 ( in november 1994) I was standing by the tracks while an NS train blows by with 2 SD40’s. Thats how i became a railfan [:I] (I was little and innocent so no flaming)
Cost of ticket from UP - $50
Cost of ticket from Kirkwood PD - $250
Cost of not being hit by train - Priceless
This is one LUCKY child! Maybe I’m a bit of a cynic but something tells me that this thrill seeking idiot will try this again or something like it … until the Law of Averages catches up with him.[xx(]
