Has anyone tried making ballast the way Andy Schnur did on his Aleghany Subdivision that appeared in the Feb 05 MR? He mentions using wasfhed sand and latex paint.
whats the question?
I used local beach sand, rinsed in purified water, and then checked for material that would cling to a magnet. The sand was grey, some quartz, darker grey, black, etc. So, I did not use tint or paint. It is noisier than WS ‘ballast’, once glued and dried, but easier to situate and to glue down than the WS. Looks great.
I was actually thinking of useing bird (parakeet) gravel ( the stuff birds eat so they can digest food) on my railroad. The stuff is real fine, and the right color for my railroad. you can get it at almost any petstore.
