Wouldn’t it be easier (and cheaper) to ship it by rail? Should be a lot less clearance issues.

Not necessarily. BART is not a standard guage system. Its a wide gauge, over 5 feet. Do it would still have to be on a flat car or low center flat car.

The cars are 10ft 6inches wide. Still at roughly 60,000 lbs and otherwise being an oversized highway load a car it would be cheaper by rail if you could get the carrier to accept the cars.

Where (what plant) were/are they built? Plattsburgh? Why not ship them, by rail, on “shop trucks”? Too bad the clueless politicians dictated BART’s wide-gauge.

I think what you’ll find is that the initial 10 cars of the first train set that are to be delivered in 2016 are moving OTR for a specific reason. Do not be surprised if some of the cars move via rail once actual production is under way, as you can consider these first 10 cars as pre-production models.

P.S. - Mr. Hays, clueless politicians did not dictate BART’s wide gauge, it was based on the presumption that they would be able to have driverless trains cruise along at 80 miles per hour and the system would be more stable with the wider gauge(amongst other factors).

Well, the presumption proved wrong = clueless, no?
