I just saw a picture on the internet in Berea of a UP Freight and I was wondering what those red signs in the mainline ment. The red signs are right those scrap rails off to the right of the picture. What do the red signs mean in a mainline.

Means there is a gang working there.

Look at rule 5.4 and the following flag rules.
if the train had up locos on it and it was on csx it could have been q 351(westbound) or q 390( eastbound).
