ah your shots blow mine away. i think because you got them during the day and i get no such luck in the crap town i live in. all 3 were there, but 8701 was there with a different train and idling on the East end of the yard while 1995 and 8646 were with a scheduled manifest headed West. i think they were originally going to pick up and take 8701 with them, but never did. oh well… again, great shots

I think the habit of referring to machines in the feminine gender is related to the perception of both machines and the fairer sex as being unpredictable and high maintenance…which may not be the case now for either, but old habits (especially bad ones) are hard to break…
Besides, guys would hate to be misunderstood being heard saying…“Dang, dont he look good…” as an object of affection goes by. Much easier to explain to a sweethart that your were referring to the machine, than to explain to one of the guys it was the machine, not the engineeer, to which you were referring…in my experience, grief from a sweethart is immediate and intense, but doesnt last long. Grief from one of the guys goes on forever…[swg]
On the Sea Ships were “She”.
Usually a Train or Truck is a “She” because they are sometimes crankier than a wife when something is not right in thier system.
For me, steam locomotives are female gendered, (she), diesels are male gendered, (he), and electrics are neuter, (it). Just my own personal preferences. Steam has too much personality to be male.
Neuter…? So…with that line of thought would that make a hybrid locomotive a cross-dresser?

i think i’ll stick with calling them "it"s… it just sounds weird and kinda dumb to call them “he” or “she” when they are not living beings to begin with
nice shots.thanks for sharing! hmm automobile names have to be female(aka millie) but trucks have to be male(aka mack and peter and ken) just a thought.
