I need to slap down some track on top of a temporary surface on my benchwork: I ran out of time to fini***he permanent sub-roadbed in order to get trains running for Christmas. I’d like to put some cork under it in order to reduce the noise.
Because the set-up will not outlast January, I’d like to use CHEAP cork, if there be such a thing. I’ve looked into large sheets and rolls that I could cut strips from, but, although I figured it would be cheaper than pre-cut roadbed, that stuff goes dear!
I’ve used dark charcoal colored carpet padding (felt-like in consistency) about 1/8 inch thick with great success. You can buy rolls of it at carpet stores for a reasonable price around here. It has the advantage of looking similar to dark grey ballast under tracks without having to do anything to it.
