Best combination of words for Google search?

Hi All,

I’d like to do an accurate web search on Scratchbuilding, What do you think is the correct terminology?

Scratch Build

Scratch Built

Scratchbuild

Scratchbuilt

Perhaps if you spell out exactly what you are looking for in the scratch building theme, Google might do a better search. All of your terms are way too broad. I just tried “scratch building” and it turned up more than 9 million suggestions. Maybe “scratch building model structures” or such.

Model railroad scratch building

That is more specific and will get you better results.

Rich

Even adding the desired scale to your search term could help narrow down the results, such as Scratchbuilding HO scale structures. This turned up 44,000 results.

Just as Rich suggested. If you want to see pic’s and more info…add Images after Building.

Take Care!

Frank

EDIT: Just copied this pic, from Images, like I suggested:

You can do that…if there is no copyrite on the pic. If there was, you would not be able to copy it.

And if you want to just see related MR (or Trains.com, I’m not sure) threads, start with “site:cs.trains.com” before your chosen search term. I finally got this point this week, via someone’s repeat suggestion (perhaps you?).

Since you’re recent to the forum, do note the “favorites” feature on the right, where you can flag (note the button below the title) a tread of interest for finding in the future. Ones where you participate are of course already in Your Discussions but the Favorites area rounds out things you want to save for future access.

It’s also worth noting that some terms can be seen with different spelling or have synonyms for the words you would expect to see. It is sometimes a good idea to run searches with slight spelling changes.

For example, search google for “model railroad” and for “model railway”. Results will probably be ordered differently.

If I may interject… that’s a common Internet misconception. Just because it’s possible to copy an image off the Internet doesn’t mean it’s allowed. At least in the United States, an image is considered to be legally protected by copyright from the instant it’s created.

There’s nothing to stop you from making copies of images on the Internet for your own use (such as for modeling reference), but if you’re planning on publishing them or re-posting them elsewhere on the Internet, you need the permission of the copyright holder (which is either the photographer or the publisher). I usually type in On30 scratchbuid. Works fine, caps not required.

Thanks for all the good responses.

How something is found on the net is unfortunately tied to the words the poster used in his description. So if he used steam engine and you use big boy for the search it probably won’t show up. I try several different search combos when I have to go beyond the obvious.

Steven Otte,

Thanks for that info.

It helped clarfy a better understanding of the copyright law, which I must have misunderstood.

Take Care!
