Online Archival footage might be your next consideration. I think the New Haven Railroad had a set of three in the old “newsreel style” that was set post war and had a wealth of visual material of the time.
DVD’s tend to get expensive.
For both informational content, and presentation I would strongly suggest subscribing to the entire set of Joe Fugate’s Siskiyou Line dvd’s or the MR library. The MR set of Dream, Plan, Build is OK but in bits and pieces. Although you do get to see a lot of different layouts and concepts. Just my 2 cents worth. jc5729 John Colley Port Townsend, WA
Reading posts from Joe Fugate here, I would assume the DVDs are very informative and a good buy, although, I myself havn’t seen them yet.
I have been buying the Dream/Plan/Build series and think that it is also a great source for those new to the hobby, although it would take many more DVDs to get the same information.
I would have to agree with John and Chris. I’ve seen a couple of the Dream-Plan-Build DVDs and I think that they are very well done.
I, too, have not seen Joe’s DVD series. But the “How to” articles that Joe has written recently (e.g. How to ballast track) are both informative and very straightforward to follow. The video series should be in the same vein.

The Dream-Plan-Build series has something for everyone. Ive gotten alot out of mine and I think the one with the “Realistic Railroad Operations” featuring the N Scale Naugatuck Valley RR and the MR staff is by far the runaway favorite.
Another show done by Andy in the Turtle Creek Railroad with a small local train operation as an example is very well done.
That along with tidbits of real life equiptment still in operation (Steam) and combined with Strasburg in online videos from Youtube and others allow one to soak in the steam for a while.
My Best Buy had a copy of “DVD Tin Can Collection” “Railway Journeys” 5 DVD set with 10hours of materialial. Inside the tin box is a nice little booklet. About $15 at BB or WM.
They also may have 4DVD set copies of “America by Rail” or “Trains Spectacular” Both contain video of US Amtrak & proto action. 2 videos in the set follow the route of a current Amtrak train. S/b $15.00.
Your best source for RR video may be to shop online. I tend to use Target/amazon. Shipping depends on how close the wharehouse is to your door, but you do get excellent UPS service.
