I am looking to upgrade from an old Concor set of E8s. What is the current “best choice” for both detail & running characteristics? I do not need a set, so a single E8, E7 or similar version is fine. Oh, Union Pacific is my prefered Road for this. Thank you for any suggestions.

Kato made an excellent E8. The trick may be in finding one. They are very fine engines.
LifeLike made some E6, E7, & E8. some modelers don’t like the nose detail on LifeLike E’s. The newer proto split frame desighn are very nice engines. Some LifeLike engines had a combonation of dummy & Rapido couplers fore & aft. Newer versions have Accumates. It may be easier to find the newer Walthers/Lifelike models.
Either model would be an upgrade from your ConCor.
THis may be one time to use Walthers website to help you find the LHS that carries the locos, or you could try *bay.
Don’t have one. Saw one in the store, so they exist.

There is also an E-8, not out yet.
The original Con-cor PA-1, E-8’s & E-7’s were make by Kato. It wasn’t until Kato started importing under their own name that Con-cor had to find a new manufacturer and the quality of the mech’s went down.
Jeff, sounds like those PCM units will be hard to beat. Might take some time to save up for one, but if they run as good as they look (nice detail), then they are probably worth the expense.
Thanks guys! Rob
I have both an N scale E7 (LL) and an E8 (Kato). Both are good locomotives, but I think the Kato is much better. I don’t know about now, but Kato once sold the E8s only in A-A sets.
