CCC&StL - a VERY large railroad for its day, relatively unknown and not much written about. [ therefor, I want to know more - without the influence of NYC]
Conrail of course! Everything from SD38s to SD80MACs, and all with those awesome marker lights! Probably one of the best railroad sucess stories would be how Conrail began with the grubby old equiptment of PC and other lines, and turned into one of the most profitabal railroads in the country at the time! You can clearly see why Conrail had “Quality” proudly painted on their rolling stock.
Conrail was a great road, your right, conrail did have quality , even after the big merger, but always, she may not live today, but she will always live in my heart, the LEHIGH VALLEY… always a great road til the #@en pennsy had to take control over her, i believe that she’d still live today if she managed to get thru the oil crisis in the 70’s not let PRR buy it’s stock, and switched her main commodity to petrolium, from the Pennsylvania oil wells… maybe just maybe, she could live again…
Best Railroad out there today? CN. No one can touch 'em on service, the closest to them is Norfolk Southern. My favorite road is the Lehigh Valley, unlike those kids who professed love for it, I am old enough to actually have seen and experienced it up close. I tried to go to work for the Valley at Niagara Falls (Suspension Bridge) only to be asked by the yardmaster: " Are you nuts?" I had no answer for that! So, I went off to work where I still work (and I still hate it), however, it pays the bills! The Valley had a diesel roster second to very few for interest however, RS2s later than any other Conrail component,Dynamic brake equipped SW8s, C420s in a dozen paint schemes-Look it up,RS11s high and low nose, PAs, FA/Bs, F3s, F7s.and The C628s, again so many different paint schemes for only 17 locos! The down side, their steam locos aside from their Wyomings (Northerns for those of you from Rio Linda) were a bit ugly. They had fat bottomed 2-10-2s,Mikes, and Pacifics that only their mothers could love. Then there was the sad fact it was not really needed after WWII.[V]
Amtrak is my favorite I find it very interasting with all of it’s issues to follow.
[SOUTHERN PACIFIC. My first train ride was on the SP.I rode the San Joaquin and Coast Daylights between L.A and San Francisco. Also they had a wide viarety of locomotives from six builders including one from Germany. They kept thier FM and Baldwins around longer than most roads, and their ALCos lasted until the early 80s.
CSX because they own the B&O. NS because they run through here and is the number one railroad in the east.
CSX, because they love their heritage and Norfolk Southern because customer satisfaction is their prime concern. NS has been with me for 9 years and the CSX 7. They have always been my favorites. One drawback for NS though, is their strictness. CSX allows you in their yards, though NS doesn’t.
And by the way waltersrails. If you’re refering to size, CSX is the number one of the east. I’m not exactly sure on how many miles of track CSX owns, but I know it’s bigger. CSX was rated third largest railroad in the US and NS was fourth. And I’m sorry if I’m saying this if ‘NS is the number one of the east’ was just your opinion. Just my two cents [2c].

the milwaukee road becuase of its underdog status
There are few railroads that i worked for that had the spirit of the Milwaukee Road. The employees were an innovative group and are in demand today as their resourcfulness is needed in the industry.
Too bad we were stabbed in the back by the directors and the officers.

hi randy
I was born in 89 so I missed the milwaukee but it has always been my favorite ever since the my grandfather pointed out the old main line as we drove over snoqualmie pass and ever since when I we go over to chelan every april I always look at every time wishing it could be revivied even though I know it will never ( but I hope) happen. I also like the great northern because my greatgrandfather worked as a station agent in chelan. I guess you could also say I am an SP fan too. Funny all my favorites are fallen flags
Being raised around the good ol’ Espee (Southern Pacific) …they were my fav…I don’t like all the mega mergers in recent years…so many clone looking locos…but what the heck…
This was the SP I remembered…
Mine is the ATSF and now BNSF. Warbonnet is the best color sceme I know.
My second favourite line is the UP, maily because of their powerful locs, such as the Big Boy.
