“Bound for Glory”, the Woody Guthrie story, has some great 30’s train scenes. You modelers out there might want to freeze frame some of the scenes for details. Does some one keep old rolling stock for movies the way antique car people rent stuff ? I know there are lots of flicks that have used museum equipment, and a few (ie. The Train) that wrecked perfectly good stuff.
I watch “In the Heat of the Night” every once in a while and love the GM&O passsenger train. Where did they get that? Restoration railroad groups, museums. tourist lines, et al have all done such a great job preserving our favorite things.
I guess that with the digital age the movie people will be able to dispatch cad trains from every era. I wonder whether the internet will have us sitting at home instead of actually visiting, contributing to, or working on preservation efforts.

“In the Heat of the Night” premiered in August 1967 but filming was probably done in the fall of 1966. At that time, the GM&O still had passenger service so they would’ve had equipment available for movie work. According to imdb.com, the opening train scenes were filmed around Freeburg, Illinois, and much of the movie was shot in Sparta, Ill. The subject matter of the movie ruled out location shooting in Mississippi, so most location filming was done in southern Illinois.

I like the movie 'Picnic" that was shot in Halstead & Hutchinson, KS in May 1955. Kim Novak & William Holden starred. It was not a rr movie, but many train scenes were throughout the flick. Mopac & SF were part of the shots. Also, inside & outside scenes from one of the massive grain terminal elevators @ Hutch were part also. Reading on the history of the work, it took several wks to shoot the scenes. During this time, a major tornado outbreak developed in KS and movie work was stopped for a couple days. About 60 miles to the southeast, a tornado wiped out Udall,KS killing 89 people.
