When I was a bicycle rider (in Japan, which has its share of grade crossings and trains) I made it a point to stop - dead - at the gate line, and visually verify that nothing was coming from either direction. As a result, I never suffered a near miss, or even a distant miss. I did see more than a few individuals who insisted on riding with their heads up and locked. I noticed that I seldom saw them at the same place and time for more than a few days (I was commuting by bicycle.)
At least the cat in Fresno is still alive. That’s beating the odds…
