I’m about to purchase these two locos both in N & HO.
I’ve never seen any of these up close and I’m very curious to know which is the longer engine.
Anyone with some knowledge of this let me know.
Richard
go to Steamlocomotive.com
they should have the stats of both locos
H-8 is 125’ . The 4000 is almost 133’.
But the Allegheny is much fatter.
The Big Boy is longer (being 132’ 10"), but doesn’t put out as much horsepower.
The Best of the West produced 6,290 HP, 80 MPH
The Beast from the East produced 7,500 HP, 70 MPH
Big Boy is longer.
Allegheny is heavier and fatter and taller and lots neater looking.

And the Yellowstone had more starting Tractive Effort than either of them.
Each locomotive was designed for its particular location. None of the locos could switch places and perform as well
We all have our favorites and not everyone likes the same one.
Thanks guys for your feedback. I shall surely keep you posted on my progress. By that way I have an AC8-12 brass on the way. This loco is neat and I’ll definately be posting some pics soon.
Ps.

Which of the cab forwards is that in the second pic.
The Cab Forward in Aggro’s second pic is his BLI AC-4/5 (or was it 5/6?). Beauty ain’t it? Aggro does AWESOME weathering jobs.
Let me guess, an Akane?
Its a BLI AC-5. Dynamite!
Hopefully I’m still kicking when that PCM AC-12 is released. It is going to be SWEET!
I’m with Aggro on the AC 8-12. IS it an Akane? Because if it is, it’ll pull everything you’ve got PLUS the walls off of the house! I’ve got one. Beautiful critter–can’t wait to see yours!
Tom [:p][:p]
Akane and twhite you’re both correct, it is an Akane.
Akane which scale do you model? Are all the locos on your layout brass?
Your collection of steam engines are outstanding not to mention the weathering,
I know 4884bigboy agrees with me on that.
twhite what wheel configuration is that bad boy crossing the bridge?
I’m building up my brass collection. I know that what I’m about to say is very ambitious but I’m going to collect as many of these articulated engines as I can before my wife clobbers me. Love em! They all look great to me. Don’t you agree?
Richard
I assume you mean me. I have no brass what so ever. But I do have a few Broadway Limiteds. If it were up to me, I’d have a Westside Grande L105, Akane B&O EM-1, a Sunset SP F-5, and a PSC DMIR M-4. But the universe don’t work that way.
If you are one those guys who can afford brass, then go for it. Good luck.
BTW Thats a fabulous Akane M-4 2-8-8-4 on tom’s bridge.
My apologies aggrojones.[] [banghead]
Brass is also a luxury item for me but when I see an engine of this calibre on ebay for $385.00 buy it now (no lie). I had to get it. I usually see bids on these starting at twice as much. By tha way I’m a hawk on ebay always checking for bargains to gobble up.[dinner]
If you just like good looking articulateds, you have to get a BLI Class A. When it came to steam, the N&W fielded the best of the best.
Very interesting. Just this evening I was reading about the Allegheny. The boiler of the big boy would fit inside the boiler of the H8. Drawbar pull from standing start was recorded at 119,350 lbs. I could throw a lot more stats at you as this is my favorite Loco but that would probably bore you so I will leave it at that.
lesterperry, I don’t mind hearing about it. You could also give me the link if it’s from a website.

This post has nothing to do with the seller. It’s just to say I’ll never be able to afford one…right now [sigh]
I imagine the Best of the West operated regularly at 80 MPH but I wonder if the Beast from the East was ever allowed to hit 70 MPH? Speed was never Chessie’s forte’. Of course, that’s not putting Chessie down; who, in their right mind, would want to run an H8 at 70 MPH over C&O’s curves? I think I’d die of fright at about 40.

Verse2damax: If you found an Akane AC8-12 on Ebay for UNDER $400, then count yourself one lucky person. BTW, those Akanes will take a minimum 24" radius with no problem (though the overhang is horrendous, LOL!). The drive train in the cab-forward is the same as the drive train on my Akane Yellowstones, so they’re simple, straight-forward and almost foolproof. Enjoy!!

Like Aggro said, this is an Akane M-4 2-8-8-4 on my bridge.
