big increase in NJ transit passengers in 2014

Major rebuilding of Pulaski Skyway after 2014 super bowl will put many commuters onto PATH & NJT. 37,000 per day will have to find other ways to get to NYC.

This is going to be fun for NJ drivers and a boon, I would suppose, for NJT. Having traveled by train, PATH, car, and bus through the Meadows since the late 40’s (memory starting time) I cannot fathom being without the Skyway without t gridlock and sinking roads!

Henry it was a white knuckle trip when I drove it, especially trying to see the PC & CONRAIL freights.

It is possible to use local roads to get to the Holland Tunnel although I suppose putting 37,000 more cars on them each day might just cause some crowding. But Hey, this is north Jersey. We’re used to taking our lives in our hands when we get in our cars.

It could be white knuckle driving through the Meadows when your father was hell bent on getting to his shop or going home while you wanted to see the PRR K4’s or Sharks on the head end of the Broker while the Tube trains whizzed by and an DL&W MU was coming the other way while the Skyway loomed in the background with cars stopped in it’s roadway. Yeah, those old roads still wend their ways through the tall grasses of the marsh with more trucks and more traffic than back in 1956. But they are still two or three lane roads with trucks and traffic lights and turns on and off for warehouses and other facilities that weren’t there back when. Gonna be rough with the Skyway closed.

Well, yes, for a lot a people, Henry. And tolls on the Turnpike and Parkway went up another 50 pen cent last January 1. And tolls on bridges and tunnels shot up too. So crowded trains will be even more crowded.

But we–you and I–will be OK riding trains and buses and not in the rush hours.
