Big Train (and Plane) Show this weekend in Va. Beach

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday the Virginia Military aviation Museum will be holding its second annual Trains and Planes Show. The museum will have six model railroad clubs there with layouts set up in one of their hangers. Scales from N through G will be present, and for the kids, Santa will be flying in on Friday and Saturday.

More information and directions to the museum can be found on their website

If my work schedule will permit I will do my best to attend this weekend…two of my favorite things: trains and planes. I went to this museum a few years back before it had opened and you could just wander around at your lesure. Take about “up close and personal” with military aircraft…very impressive; never did I think I could actually reach out and touch a P-51.

Planes? Must be a plaything for the idle rich. Let us hope that it is just a passing fancy and will die a quick death due to a total lack of interest. The steel highway is the only way for civilized man to travel!

Just got back from the show today. Seeing the planes up close and personal was a real treat! They have an excellent collection of 3 Fokker Dr I and a number of rare Russian airplanes, all of which you can see and touch. The train show was pretty nice, there was a lot of really good work on display, but I must say I was very dissapointed by the surly attitudes of the people manning the displays. It was clear from their dour looks and curt answers that the N scalers had much better places to be, and nobody at the HO modules would even make eye contact, let alone answer a question. The exception to this was the Tidewater Big Train Operator’s Club, they were friendly, courteous and more than willing to share their love of railroading with the public.

I got some really good ideas looking at the displays, and my decision to avoid joining any model railroad clubs was reinforced by those putting on the displays. I might give the TBTOC a closer look, but I have no interest in joining an HO club if that is the attitude of the members. Luckily the $10 entrance fee was well worth it for the museum, I would have asked for my money back had it been only for the train show.
