I may be behind the times but i stumbled upon a use for blast furnace slag. A company in Utah uses what is known as slag cement which recycles slag from iron ore processing.I want to model a cement distribution plant and found a small unloading facility using googlemaps near I-215. This led to the discovery of the Metro Readymix company and the use of slag. Read more about it here:
Cement production and as a substitute for gravel are probably the most common uses, but you should check out the National Slag Association for more info.
i think there was an outfit in Granite City Illinois years ago that made concrete blocks from slag that came from the steel mill. i don’t know if they are still around or not. the steel mill is.
Slag is the by product of inserting limestone into the steel making process to pull the impurities out of the iron ore.
So it follows that anywhere you could use limestone, you should be able to use slag.
I know in Ohio it is used as subbase for roads and other structures. Also it was once used to make aspahlt, but the clay that attached to the slag caused the asphalt to pop after placement due to the fact that dried clay expands when wet and it would pop out holes in the asphalt after it was laid.
