I’m in the process of scanning my older photos then storing them to CD. Its rather time consuming, but fun to look at this stuff again. Thought I’d share some more photos with those that may be interested.
January 20, 1986 found us chasing SP 7551 from Fernley NV (MP 276.1) to Weso, NV (MP 420.9) on Espee’s “Overland Route.” Weso, NV is just east of Winnemucca, NV and is the western end of the “Nevada Paired Trackage.” This photo was taken at Humboldt, NV (377.0).
Outstanding photographs. I especially like the subject matter. Ironically, I have been loking through some of the photographs I took in the 1980s (unfortunately, I did not take many then). It is amazing how not even 20 years ago graffiti was so sparse, now it seems more cars than not are covered with graffiti on the bottom part of the sides.
Nice pix Jim, That area has always been a favorite. I was just up there a few weeks back. There wasn’t any traffic on the SP, oops I mean UP, but I did catch a couple up in Gerlock though. Man do they fly through there. The well cars look like they could get airborne when they hit the crossing and you can see the ground ripples eminating away from the tracks. From 75’ away from the tracks you feel like there’s an earthquake.
Jim, I usually don’t have a lot of time to do anything on my trips up north as they are weekend trips. 1600 miles in two days doesn’t leave a lot of time. If I do have time and am in the area I’ll let you know. I usually go up 95 and then over to 447 and take the back way through Nevada. Mabee we could meet in Fernley. I may be up that way next month but I have no definate plans.
Really nice pics SP9033 I espually like the pic of the SP units smokin it up during the derailment. Really nice.
Since there was so much talk of graffiti (spelling) on locomotives I’m going to have to say something. If you want to see some hard core grafitti come to south Philly and Camden, NJ right across the river from Philly. They have lots of graffiti on railway equipment, from sign posts to towers…ect. That really tickes me off. I know for a fact that Septa faces lots of grafitti on the regional rail lines, subway, and the L. However, on the regional rail line if there is grafitti on one of the Silverliners or trainsets Septa cleans it off asap.
I found some match books that the SPRR gave me when they were alive. If you want I can pull the matches out & mail you the covers if you have the courage to send me your address. You can then remember the SPRR every time you see the covers in your house. I would also offer you UPRR ones but I am sure you do not want those. [:o)][:p][B)]
