BLI switcher lights

I have a BLI NW2 phase V diesel switcher that has a lighting problem. The light to the rear, over the cab, is very bright almost too bright. The headlight however, can barely be seen. Is there a fix for this?

Mine’s like that too!

One thing I can say; With the headlight toggled on, the front one always stays on, and brightens when going forward. The rear light is about twice as bright, and goes completely off when idling. IIRC, the interior light glows when in reverse or at rest too.

I think it’s supposed to be that way, but I’ll be you can jack up the brightness of the front headlamp if you knew the proper CV to program. If you get no solution from others here on the forum, let me know and I’ll check my documentation on that QSI decoder that came with mine.

Does yours have sound, too?

The answer to your problem is probably going to be in the QSI Technical Reference Manual that must be downloaded from the Broadway Limited or QSI web site and will not be in the bare-bones documentation that came with the locomotive.

(sigh of commiseration) Yes, I’m afraid that is the way to your answer, Bruce.

I think I know why. I’ve got the BLI SW-7 C&O #5239 and noticed that too. I took the shell off (be careful) and noticed the front LED was pointing straight up into the shell. Eventually, I will replace the LED with the same one but with longer leads so I can bend them so the LED points straight ahead. I just have to write BLI and see if I can buy one from them that is exactly the same but without clipped off leads. Wait a minute, you guys probably know what LED they use and where I could get one (Radio Shack, etc.). The LED looked amber but it puts out a white light when the shell is on (I havent run it with the shell off to see for myself if it is the LED or a tinted plactic lens, didn’t look tinted). I don’t have recent experience with LEDs so I don’t know what the latest tricks the industry uses to get a nice white light.

delray,

Just stop down at your LHS and pick up a 5-pak of 3mm golden-white LEDs with resistors. (Miniatronics makes some.) If none of your LHSes carry any, Litchfield Station has 'em. Here’s the direct link to their LED page:

LEDs

Hope that helps…

Tom

All I can tell you is that the front light does get brighter when moving forward and doesn’t go completely out when in reverse. Has anyone got the correct CV for the brightness of the front light?

It sounds like it’s working properly and IMHO, I would not take the shell off. Check your email.
