I just got my BLI Hudson back from BLI, it died back in Dec. they replaced the circuit board. When I ran it tonight it would stop and start, change speeds and sound the whistle on its own. I noticed the the starting and stopping happened at the same spots, obviously dirty track. I cleaned the track and its runs much better but it still sounds whistle on its own. Could that still be caused by dirty track?
It could be a combination of dirty track and dirty wheels. The wheels may have become corroded while sent in for repair, so cleaning them wouldn’t hurt.
Check the tender wheels, too, since they also pick up power for the decoder.
You think that’s weird? My QSI-equipped Lionel Challenger automatically sounds the bell as soon as I put it in reverse. Every time. And this has only begun to happen since about mid-December.
I think the QSI decoders are eerie, sometimes…like they may be developing personalities, or something. Think HAL 9000. Dave, I said, “Think HAL 9000.”
You are lucky it only does that. #5344 Hudson will start moving in the roundhoue even though it is NOT selected. #5343 Hudson scared the hell out of me when I was working on the other end of the yard, track power was on, NO controllers where seclecting any engines and the CTC was off line. #5343 blew it whistle (3) times and the headlights came on. These are both BLI with the new chips. Yes I was not drinking BEFORE this after you better belive it.
Timothy, I’d love for that to be the case with the QSI…it’s just that the one in the Lionel is the only one that does it. I do like the effect…kinda neat.
QSI sound systems / decoders have a CV setting that you can use to make the bell come on when the engine is in reverse. I set up my BLI NW-2 that way (for a while anyway, it got kinda annoying even though it’s correct, engines are supposed to sound their bell while backing up). OK now which CV it is I don’t remember right now, have to dig out my notes but if you go to the BLI website you can access/download the full QSI instructions that list all the CV setting options.
I am sure this is true, it’s just weird that I have never programmed this decoder for other than address, overall volume, and CV’s 2-4 inclusive. How did it get programmed to do this, and when?!
