I have blocked images using my firefox from this forum, my 56k can’t take it with the huge load times.Blocked from the forums and ads/kalmbach. Trying to keep the forums speedy as possible.
why can’t I get broadband? I am in the boonies just far enough away from any high speed access, yet its only a few miles away…duh…
Being on the fringes is the pits!..Been there, done that, bought the program. “Sat-net” is 2 - 3X the cost of a internet package from your telco or cable provider [:(]
Sounds like you did in Firefox what you needed to do. I think they’ve bulked up the forum pages with too much advertising, and thus, made it slower loading.
I inquired about DSL a few years ago and was told by the local telephone company that it works only if you’re within 5 cable miles of a central switch. I live in a city but the routing of the telephone cabling makes me more than 5 miles from them.
Satellite costs big dollars – some advertise cheap rates and free installation as bait, but the final monthly cost is going to be double or triple what they claim by the time you pay for the equipment and thier actual monthly fees once the bait period has expired. Been there, done that, on two different satellite systems. The biggest problem with satellite is blackouts at certain times of the year from the sun and cloud cover obstructing the signal. Have you ever tried to reach customer service of a satellite provider?
I block alot of imagery bloat from advertising with the Firefox on DSL and aint been thrown out of forums yet. And that is without deploying additional retail software designed to break ads. Adware Pro is one such item. They can snip ads before it reaches your computer.
Download and install the free spyware blaster, activate the macromedia “Killbit” that just basically disables all moving images such as flash, you tube movies and everything video and moving ads.
Finally I deploy firewall rules behind my router to specifically block advertising providers by subnet, none of thier computers or servers will be allowed to connect to my machine. I discover that some of those servers are the very same ones that provide my internet LOL. So I tread carefully.
Fiber Optic is another option that may be availible for your area. Also if you get cable TV you might get internet that way as well. Fiber is replacing copper and is able to reach a farm house 180 miles from a telco.
Satellite delay times are up to 3 seconds each way, fine for internet browsing but no good for gaming or other real time events.
I run satellite for news and movies and if it rains beyond an inch per hour it will be lost until the rain goes away. No big deal.
Google ISP Providers for your area and in your zip code will be availible DSL providers.
If nothing is availible, then visit a university, college or public library and do your trains forums and interneting there. Just need a USB thumb drive with several gigs of capacity to carry data and pictures to and from your machine. Universities usually have fiber.
Finally but not last, Dailup is probably overloaded with today’s bloat and you might want to downgrade to the oldest version of browser and run off that. In addition, turn off animation of web pages and similar options within your computer’s internet options that will slow down and ease the pressure on your small connection.
Unfortunately, DSL like the older ISDN only works well up to 18,000 feet from a switch. Even at that distance it’s pretty slow. The data rate continues to drop off with distance.
Not an option for those away from an area of dense population. For those on dial up you can try asking the telco for a digital line card. Tell them you have a noisy VOICE line. They will generally upgrade hardware to achieve data bandwidth but will often upgrade to maintain a decent voice quality.
