Blowing Smoke!

I’m just alittle curious to know if the N scale steam engines are able to generate smoke. Like the larger scale models do.

thanks …

Norman,

I think if you run enough current through them…sure. [swg] Seriously, I don’t recollect if I’ve ever seen an N-scale steamer with a smoke unit.

I believe there were some way back in the dark ages, but I don’t think there was much to them. The idea obviously didn’t catch on. Your best bet is to use some photo shop!

Along with others here, I would consider the smoke units to be more of a gimmick than anything… at least in HO and smaller. The old American Flyer S scale stuff was heavy ehough where I don’t think the oils on the track would have much effect on the electrical pickup - I’ve run some that have been sitting on a shelf for 20 years and with a little oil (if necessary) they run like a swiss watch… same goes for any of the larger scales…

Smoke in N Scale is not a good idea. The film the smoke oil leaves on the track raises very big traction issues, as in no traction. Been there and done that.

The basic problem with N scale smoke is not so much the oily residue, it’s the heat generated by the smoke generators. When I first got my Athern Challenger, I bought 2 Southe smoke units - I figured that the two units the loco was capable of would look more realistic than the wimpy single units of the cheap Bachmann’s - NOT SO!! While refilling the units, I touched one of them [:(!] Hot as heck!! Most N scale locos are plastic, and would not “take the heat”!! My [2c]
