Along side of that “Sunset Lines” reference, which befuddles,…the wording said the train, “rolled out.” (My—(select your deity) what is the difference, if one can be distinguished?
Something occurred in Quebec at Lac Megantic.
This incident seems similar?

It’s the ghost of the Sunset Lines.

“This incident seems similar?”

Is that a question?

Sounds like the operator forgot to tie the train down.

I deserve some punishment way short of capital, corporal or confinement for the times I’ve referred to stuff and places thinking that “everyone” knew what I was “referring to.”
But, let me tell ya’ that I’m a Long Islander who became a Californian 55 years ago, then an SP employe (SP spelling) and operating officer, got to work into Arkansas and Louisiana but that’s as close to the Great Chicago-Land that I worked…
So that mention of the Sunset, a “befuddling” comment, guiltily and innocently, I meant that, I thought: LA to New Orleans, the Sunset Limited, Nos 1 and 2…The Sunset.
That you took time to explain the context, many thanks,
Stephen Karlson, and by virtue of luck I rode a round trip from Milwaukee to Chicago…on the last day of the C,NS,&M, a Electroliner meet in the blowing snow at about 70 mph, combined a meet at 130 plus mph. 'Love the land around and in Chicago…sort of.

I thought CTA used ATS equipment like New York City. How could a train roll thru that. At least no fatalities thankfully.

  1. Why would an unmanned train be sitting at a station?
  2. If the train was actually in a siding at a station, why was a derail not set before the fouling point so that a rrunaway train would not enter the main track?

Francis, the “Sunset Lines” refers to the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin electric interurban line, which into the Chicago Loop from the abovementioned towns. When I-290 was built on the CA&E right-of-way from Forest Park into Chicago, the CTA would only allow CA&E passengers to board CTA El trains at Forest Park after paying an additional fare. That proved to be the final nail in CA&E’s coffin, bankruptcy and cessation of service following soon afterwards.

The trains originate at Forest Park, and are set on the station track, which is also the main, until scheduled departure. The operator can take a break for a few minutes while the train is siting there, but brakes should have been set.
