BLW DEMONSTRATOR COLORS

I NEED HELP DETERMINING THE CORRECT SHADES OF BLUE AND CREAM PAINT AS WOULD HAVE BEEN USED ON THE BALDWIN CENTIPEDE 6000A/B DEMONSTRATORS (SECOND VERSION). THANX FOR YOUR HELP.

I wasn’t aware that these units wore creme and blue, every photo i’ve seen shows a green, similar to Pullman Green and gold lettering and scarlet red Baldwin shield on the nose. The pre sharks demostrated in a blue and creme modeled after the Missouri Pacific pattern and indeed MP did purchase a few…

For the blue and creme & red I recommend a copy of Don Balls, Americas Colorfull Railroads, you might have to do some digging to find this book, anyhow, there is shot of the Sharknose units on the CNJ in the Red, blue, creme…

Thanks for your reply; I saw a color picture about 30 years ago when I bought these units, but I remembered them as blue and white. The people at the ‘Diesel Zone’ who are into Baldwins said they were cream and white, and they emailed me a picture of the drawing on the front of ‘The Diesels from Eddystone’ which showed the 6000 in those colors, but not that I think would be an accurate color match. It had BLW in a circular herald with the letters curved to fit. The reason I want the right colors is that U.P. ordered a pair, but never took delivery, so I plan to run them on my U.P. based layout in the demonstrator livery.

I’m with you now, I too have seen this scheme, that makes three demostrator colors i’m aware of, and it is just two colors, but I believe it’s red and white with red side panel lettering on a creme background and the cast Baldwin shield across the nose, creme and white dosen’t make much sense to me, too close to each other. I have a photo of what you seek, i’ll do some detective work to find it…Are these the units that when refused by the UP were sold Mexico?

My mistake, I meant blue and cream as opposed to blue and white. It appears to be a painted logo on the nose. The 1973 Diesel Spotters Guide reports 6000 A&B as scrapped unsold, but there were c. 40 units sold to (mostly) PRR, as well as SAL and NdeM.

Gearhead, in the book The Diesel Builders vol. 3 Baldwin Locomotive Works there is a color picture of the first 6000 built during the war, kind of a prototype for the Centipedes. It was also painted blue and cream with red stripes seperating the blue and cream.

Going by the picture and a Walther’s catalog the closest match for paint would be ATSF Blue and the cream looks just like real coffee cream.

In the book Diesels From Eddystone there is a black and white picture of demonstrator Centipedes. The units were painted blue with the cream stripe as the cover shows with the BLW in the circle herald on the nose. The cream stripe ends right before the cab door and is rounded on the end. Also in the stripe under the cab window is the number 6000 rather large. I cannot see any other lettering on the sides of the units in the picture.

As for the disposition of the demonstrators it says the units were completed in early 1948 based on a Union Pacific order which was canceled before delivery, the duo demostrated for less than a year, then were stored until scrapped in 1952.

Thank you. Mark Landry from ‘The Baldwin Diesel Zone’ has already sent me 3 b&w photos of the demonstrators, as well as the cover shot.

Thanks for the additional info. What I really need now is to get as accurate color match as possible.
