BN PROTOTYPE F7 AND F3 REAR PAINT SCHEME

There’s a site that list all of BN locomtive (roster) from the time BN was formed. I knew about this site for a while as I refer to it when painting my BN loco’s and for detail. I’ve been researching this and can’t come up with an answer for this. Maybe somebody here knows.

Now I come to you.

There 2 BN F7A and a F3 painted in a BURGANDY/RED color. I need to know what were they used for? Freight or Passenger or both. I have a pair of Stewart F7’S comming soon and they are Undec. I would like to paint them in this scheme as they are rare to me. I never seen anyone with this scheme on anyone layout. Hopefully someone here knows. Oh, the F3 in the pic looks a little bronze on the nose (maybe the sun) but still look burgandy. They are just sitting there, Not pulling anything. that’s why I’m asking.

Here’s the link.

archive.trainpix.com is the site, just in case the links don’t work .

Check out this link:

It looks like they were both original passengers for the Spokane, Portland and Seattle.
BN just plastered their name on them without repainting them.
Of course BN probably wouldn’t have used them for that since they were in the passenger business for only one more year after it came into exsistence.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link , but l can’t read anything on that page. All in tiny letters with no Pics. How did you come to get this answer?

On the Trainpix site the BN index http://archive.trainpix.com/BN/EMDORIG/F3A/INDEX.HTM showed that the units originally came from the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Ry. so I googled the SP&S and found the page that I linked in my first post which listed them as passenger units.
Here is a copy and paste of the info you need from the link in my first post:

BN had 6 former SP&S passenger F’s, #9750-9760 series, that they used as rotary snowplow power (July,1972 to April,1974). In 1974 they were restored back to regular service, (by reinstalling their traction motors) but remained in their mineral red maintenance-of-way colors until the last one was painted into the black/green in July 1976.
There is an section on these F’s in the 1974-75 BN Annual.
Dan

Yes I know that they were former SP&S. They were still in SP&S colors at the time. Not the all burgandy color.

Dan, you answered my question right on the money. I thought they had something to do with BN work train, but wasn’t sure. Those were the only equipment BN had in that color. I may not paint my F7’s in this scheme now that I know, But I might paint my F3’s in this scheme and lash up some Athearn work trains in the same scheme. What do you think about that?
