BNSF Daggett/Barstow Ca

when BNSF crews operate UP trains west from Daggett the crews run through barstow and change in san bernadino, correct?

are there any UP trains operating through barstow and then north to bakersfield?

at the west end of barstow yard is there a “Y” so a train could go west that come down from richmond?

#3. Yes,there is a connecting track from the line to Mojave(Bakersfield), and the line to San Bernardino(Los Angeles).

Deanp,
UP crews run from Yermo down to the basin where ever that train is going be it West Colton or LA or wherever.

UP runs the Trona coal train from Dagget to Mojave and occasionaly a coal train to some where in the San Joaquin valley but other than that nothing to bakersfield on the BNSF.

Yes, there is a connection for trains to bypass Barstow on the two lines (LA-BA) but in practice I don’t think it’s used much (I’ve never seen one do that and I have spent a lot of time around that Y.

It’s my understanding that UP crews would operate between Yermo and East Los Angeles.

Crews to/from Bakersfield I thought were Bakersfield - West Colton runs.

Yea, The UP stuff goes through West Colton so there is no call for UP trains to go Barstow-Mojave. The exception is the coal trains I mentioned. The Trona train Used to come from Utah, take the Overland to Roseville over Donner, then down to Bakersfield, and back over the Sierras to Mojave and then up the Jawbone line to be delivered to the Trona RR. This was a logical choice for movement down the LA&SL route to Barstow and over to Mojave from there on BNSF rights (I don’t know when they got those rights though).

It’s odd how they handle this train crew wise though. Instead of useing LA-Yermo pool for this train they use a Bakersfield-West Colton crew and deadhead them to Yermo to wait for it’s arrival. Sometimes the crew will die on the law before the train even arrives and it has to wait for there rest before moveing. I know all this because I almost got a cabride on this train once.

The other train I don’t know much about. It goes somewhere up in the San Joaquin valley but I’m not sure where. It doesn’t run nearly as often as the Trona trains.

Interesting timing, I just saw a Manifest - Yermo to Roseville Extra originating on the 13th (MYRRVX 13) today (one of six trains in two hours at the train yard). I do not know how often UP runs such extras. A couple of years ago there was a train that would run between Fresno and Yermo. It used to run between Bakersfield and Yermo. I do not know if it no longer runs or if it is a Bakerfield to Yermo train.

Coal trains to go to Savage Industries in Wasco, CA. However, it seems like the last I heard they were interchanged to BNSF in either Barstow or Colton ( I do not remember which place).

That’s interesting Eric. I have never seen a UP train other then coal on the BNSF between Barstow and Mojave. How often does it run, do you know?

If you are refering to the trains that operate, or operated, between Yermo and Bakersfield/Fresno, I do not even know if they exist anymore. I think it was 2002 or 2003 the last time I saw one. They appeared to run one direction one day and the other direction the next day.

Also, not all of those coal trains go to Wasco. I believe coal trains go to the concrete plants at Creal and Monolith, and to a cogeneration plant on the Trona Railway (I do not remember which town is closest to it).

I don’t think Creal or Monolith take unit trains so that stuff may still take a West colton route sience they are blocks instead. I bet the boys over at socalrailfan.net would know.

No sorry what you posted is incorrect. The UPRR crew is changed north of Daggett @ Yermo 2/3 miles from Daggett & that new UPRR crew takes the train all the way to LAX exiting the BNSF at either Colton or Riverside. The UPRR trains just use a thru track to get thru Barstow without stopping. [:o)]

No there is a 3rd track in the Cajon pass that leads to Mojave & Bakersfield via the T/loop that begins at Colton that was former SPRR now UPRR. There are NO UPRR trains destined for the Bay area or the SJ valley moving thru Daggett as those trains either move over the former SPRR Donner pass crossing or the former WPRR crossing thru the Feather river canyon exiring at Roseville. As usual spbed you don’t have a clue. Take your misinformation elsewhere.
