BNSF H4 on the SD40-2

Very strange. I have never seen a loco like this before. This engine passed through Rochelle yesterday too.

Here’s the correct link- http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=108044

Looks like regular H1 paint but with some weird patch job on the nose. 7311 is exCN SD40 5178.

I don’t think I’d call it H4. I think it’s more like H1 with Bondo and primer, or something to that effect.

I’m not sure I’m ready to call the new logo scheme H3, actually. Let’s not be in a ru***o get to H4 (unless BNSF does go back to the H1 look with a logo that isn’t designed by a 15 year old skate punk).

Just my [2c] of course.

Maybe it hit a car and got a nosejob[:p]

We saw one like that go through here and I just figured it was some handiwork of Dr 90210…

Next we’ll be hearing that the merger with CSX is imminent, because this uses the gray ‘stealth’ paint… no, wait, maybe it’s NS because of the primer color that seems to be a new standard look… ;-}

Seriously, 7311 seems to have been running with that nose since as early as September 2003. Some attempt was made to keep the green and yellow part of the paint on the nose, which is commendable and shows someone was thinking of esthetics as far as possible. I think the “bondo after an impact” idea is correct; the engine is perfectly serviceable and will probably continue in service until it can get a trip to the paint shop for this (MINOR, in the Great Scheme of Things on BNSF) item. Why waste a stick-on herald until you have the right color paint under it…

if it hit something why isnt the rest of the front in primer?

Maybe only the nose was damaged?

Yep, wreck damage for sure.

Is it just me or does it look like that unit has a beak.[swg]

I do wonder about this locomotive maybe it has been in an accident before and BNSF just decided to put primer on the nose temporaily until the unit returns to the paint shops. If it’s been like that for a long time then I’m going to say that BNSF didn’t care about repainting the unit they cared more about getting it back out on service. This is an interesting case though.

Overmod, I think your right NS is starting a new paint scheme “Total Stealth”, were they leave the units in primer and use either black or red lettering on the sides of the cab for number and logo. lol.
