I was reading in the July issue of Trains the ‘Loser Logo’ letter by David A. Condon…this led me to wonder if BNSF have purposefully removed the historical ties from their logo pending a namechange if a round of mergers take place? I mean say BNSF + NS merge, i think the system would be too big to not include a reference to the eastern portion of their would be empire in the name.
I am a huge CB&Q/BN/BNSF fan but I am not a big fan of the new logo. But perhaps a future regime will change things back just as CP Rail became Canadian Pacific Railway again. I agree with you it was probably done with a future eye towards mergers.
The little cartoon (in Trains) about the Native American advertising mascot losing his job may be more telling than you know.
I think the combined-road crossbuck is ideal for situations in which there is limited space, such as on Chicago’s Metra commuter cars and on auto-racks.
The BNSF and “swoosh” is trite and tired. I like the modified warbonnet much better, as do about two-thirds of the people I have talked with.
Perhaps the adoption of BNSF as the road’s full name and that sterile swoosh lacking historical precedent was indeed done to make the road more palatable to investors and financiers. I really don’t know, but the change was certainly made to de-historicize the two former competitiors’ identities. Read last years Annual Report or go to Yahoo.finance and scan for articles–the company admits as much.
Interesting that the Genessee & Wyoming finds the warbonnet potent enough to be putting something very much like it on its newly acquired lines’ locos ASAP… [8)][;)][}:)]

It is an ok logo, I personally like heritage 2. But at least it shows they are ready to move into the future of railroading.
On the subject of rebranding, I also do not care for the black and orange. I could live with “pumpkin” because it sort of resembled the old GN. But here ago, no historical antecedent for black and orange. If I were Matt Rose, I would have kept half the fleet in Warbonnet and the other in other GN’s Blue Sky or NP’s Loewy greens. But I suppose that’s why I’m here and he’s the CEO!
It’s no worse than Union Pacific.
Allan.
If the BNSF aquires NS, the BNSF logo shoud be the same, no changes. If the NS aquires the BNSF, the NS loco shoud be the same, no changes. Let’s keep things simple. Pretty soon, if it is possible for every freight railroad to combine, the railroad name will be something like BNSFNSCSXCPCN[tdn]
OK, how about this one?: Norfolk & Western… Got a nice ring to it, easy to remember,…rolls right off the tongue,…I like it.
I love the new BNSF logo ,I have since day 1.If you were a “REAL” BNSF fan you would too.BNSF’s engines look faster with the new logo and more futuristic…so get used to it just like you did when the H1 and the H2 came out!
But see the future of railroading SUCKS! No SD45’s, no exhaust pouring out, quiteness,UGLY GE’s. I prefer SD45’s, no crash 9’s, SD40’s, and railroads that have old power running nicely. Not all this futuristic stuff. If i were a REAL BNSF fan i wouldnt anymore, ill tell you that much. They have no class anymore. They are more like a 1, no class what so ever.
Alec
I’m sorry you feel that way but like I said before…get used to it!
And last time I checked the SD45 was flying out the window.CN is slowly selling the WC SD45s, MRL will most likely get rid of its SD45s as more of the SD70ACes come in,IC&E retired 1 of its 2 SD45s and the other will most likely be on the way to retirement and BNSF sold all their SD45s to NRE.

I’m not essentially against modernisation as long as a few SD45s get preserved somewhere.

I really couldn’t tell youi if I truly like the new BNSF logo or not as I have only seen it in photos and not “in the flesh” as it were…and I live three miles from the BNSF racetrack to and from Chicago…VERY FRUSTRATING TO ME!
I saw the new BNSF logo on brand new cars (brown) of a unit grain train in Mendota IL on 6/24/2005. These cars were on the track of the new high speed grain facility, right off of I-39.
They looked sharp

Please, no more “witch hunts.” How much someone loves or dislikes the BNSF may have a lot to do with how much he/she loves the new logo, but it doesn’t follow that hating the swoosh makes anyone a bigot or a reactionary.
Has anyone noticed that GE itself uses two logos: the new, forward-looking slant and the old “monogram” done in mock electric wiring. GE uses the older logo more often than the new, especially in its subsidiaries (see “Monogram Credit”). And GE’s subsidiary NBC uses quite a few: the old “radio chimes” design from the forties, the 1959 “snake” that spells out NBC in one stroke accompanied by the chimes (which are G, E and C on the musical scale–that goes back to the late 1920s), the peacock, and a modernized peacock. About the only one the network hardly if ever uses is the block “N” from 1976 which turned out to be in use already by a Nebraska PBS station (!) which had had its “N” designed by a graphic firm that charged a tiny fraction of what NBC’s design firm did.
Let a thousand flowers bloom, and please let’s stop impugning each other’s integrity because of a stylistic preference. [2c] [:(]
it Sucks i hate it

Allan.
Did Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck design it?
It really sucks.
