do any of you guys have a intermodal yard on your layout. if so could you please post a few pics of it. if you dont mind. i need a few ideas and i want to steal a couple ideas from you guys. to put on my layout.
Here is a start. Suggest that you make a dock type setting on one side. If you have room, add some water and ships.
Since you have more room, you can make the sidings longer.
being that you have 2 tracks under the crane. does the boom have room to lower down and pick up the trailors off the flat car without hitting the side of the crane. i was experimenting with my crane and when i tried to open the clamps when it was as close as yours was to the side it wouldnt open the clamps without hitting the side, also wouldnt open wide enough to clamp around the trailor when it was that close. a single track just doesnt take up the room to make it look realistic and 2 tracks seem to take up to much room to where you cant operate the crane properly. do you have any suggestions for this problem
Reggie,
NS operates an Intermodal yard near my mother’s house in Buffalo NY. The operation there typically involves a single track with the open area dedicated to staging trailers for off/on loading manuvers. I would think that rail car to rail car moves would not be that frequent. Hope this helps.

Reggie,
Take a look at this Google Map of the Buckeye Yard on the West Side of Columbus. The Northeast Corner of the yard is intermodal. Also, note the loop in the Southeast.
Found this picture. It looks like they cover one siding, leaving room on the other side to set the container down.
Yes, it will work and set trailer/container in the middle. BTW: the crane is not one of Lionel’s best operating accessories. Lots use a big forklift type tractor.
You might find this video interesting. The loading of the empty cars are at the very end but worth the time. VIDEO
Consider an intermodal siding with simulated pavement at the height of the top of rail.
The Lionel Intermodal Crane can move over the intermodal siding.
On another portion of the layout have an intermodal spur with one or two tracks.
Try for variations in the destinations.

? for you how far do you have your tracks spaced apart from each other, also how far do you have to center rails from the inside of your crane. hope you can help me here. you say you can remove trailors from the trains without hitting the inside of the crane leg when it goes up and down. if thats the case i would love to have your measurements to use on my layout. thanks in advance.
