Bachmannn is doing full domes in SP Daylight, GN, and Royal Gorge (rio grande scheme) Now, I know that SP never used full domes in SP, but it’s the closest this kid’s budget will get to a San Jauquin 3/4 dome.
Other than being smoothed sided instead of corrugated, how are these different from the ones they have been making for years and years?
Is it a GN full dome window pattern? If so they missed the boat on that one. I would have bought a fleet of them 10 years ago, but with the Walther’s coming out two years ago - I’ve already got a fleet of them.
I believe this is the same car they have been offering since the mid-70s. Not that it is a bad car, add KDs, better trucks (or at least up grade the wheels).
The Bachmann has a ‘kinda/sorta’ SP look to it, even though it’s a full instead of one of the home-built SP 3/4 domes. If you were modeling the “San Joaquin” or “Shasta” Daylights, it might pass muster if you don’t mind the non-corrugated sides. It would give more of an ‘impression’ than actuality, of course.
The one that really popped my eyeballs was the Rio Grande announcement. Their “Royal Gorge” domes were all ex-Chessie low-profile “vista” dome cars bought second-hand from the ill-fated C&O “Chessie” streamliners. And though Rio Grande was probably the PERFECT railroad for a full-dome car (all that fabulous scenery), they had nary a one, LOL! It would sure look weird on my 1950 Royal Gorge. [:P]
The dome car wasn’t original with the Shasta, it was added later in the train’s run. I’ve got a photo of one running on the Shasta on page 197 of my John Signor book RAILS IN THE SHADOW OF MT. SHASTA. Unfortunately, there’s no date given of the photo, so I can’t tell you when the dome was added.
