Hi Hi
I got a N scale train for X-mas, a loco w/5 cars and track. I have set it up and it has a traction problem. It will not even make it around the track by itself let alone pulling anyone of it’s 5 cars. Any suggestions? Jim

Hi. It is unlikely that it is getting insufficient voltage, but that doesn’t mean it’s not the problem. Are you sure your power supply is up to snuff? Have you tested power at the rails?
If that is not the problem, and if the rails are themselves properly connected so that each provides continuity to the next over the entire line, then it must be resident in the engine. At that point, it becomes a methodical isolation of the usual culprits. Could be dirty track or wheel pickups for the power to get to the motor, or perhaps a very dry motor or gear box.
If this is not easily remedied, I would hasten back to the retailer or to someone who can quickly fix the problem for you without voiding any warranty.
this is a new unit. I thought that the track is just slick? jim
If you think the track is too slick, wipe it down with alcohol and a rag. Do the same with you wheels, but keep it off the plastic.
Hey Jim, [#welcome] to the forum.
The first thing I would ask is, what kind of track did it come with? The second would be, where did you set it up? Is it on a reasonably flat surface, like a table top or a piece of plywood? If you just set it up on the carpet, it will not be flat, and when the engine goes across the track joints, they will push down and not give you the most reliable electrical connection. Are all the track sections connected together properly? Lots of folks here will have other ideas, but if you can give us some more details it will help us to help you.
