Brass 3-Dome Tank Car

I have just perchased a 3 dome

and its a Gem models

how is the quality of this company

I got it for $30 so its in my price range

guess you cant expect too much for $30

I see gem and most are in a low price group, is it a bad quality or is it old ??

once again I need your help

K

Gem is good. Looks like you got a fair price, specially if you like to collect brass. Brass is forever man!

thanks reklein

I did read some posts

it read that gem engines are not that great,

I guess a tank car is immune from that

Ken

Looks like a keeper to me. Good find.

Oh, and by the way, enjoy the Proto Santa Fe boxcar.[;)]

hey how did you know I got that

it was with the boom car he shipped both for $5

K

I was one of the bidders on the boxcar, and I also looked at that boom car while it was still up for auction. I remember seeing your eBay name on another thread you started (had the eBay auction link). No a bad deal on shipping. I think that I really want to wait for a car that is still in its complete kit form. I heard they are great kits!!

there in bad shape the boom car has glue on the roof and the box car has broke ladders

you smart to grab a new kit

I see two roof in the boomcar maby I can fix it

K

You should be able to get ladders from Detail Associates, but I don’t know about the glue. You seem to be the sort that has a talent for re-habilitating things, so…

There is a Lambert brass boom car up on eBay right now…

What search did you do to find it and post pics of damaged items, I do restores and I might be able to help.

There’s nothing wrong with GEM engines or cars. They go for less money than most brass because they are older pieces and the details are usually below par with current brass. They tended to be well built and nice items. If you have the talent to change details like ladders, etc you can make very nice cars & engines from them for the cost of some brass detail parts.

The engines were usually very tough mechanisms and the only problem today is the lack of a can motor. The details were crude and often lacking on them which is easy to correct. Many early engines did not have standard items we expect today on brass like brake shoes, ropes for bells & whistles, brake gear and cab interior details/backheads.

Personally, I’d rather have an old GEM, Custom Brass or PFM engine than the low quality “Prestige Series” from Sunset. They have many substandard quality parts and wear out very fast compared to the older stuff.
