I was one of the bidders on the boxcar, and I also looked at that boom car while it was still up for auction. I remember seeing your eBay name on another thread you started (had the eBay auction link). No a bad deal on shipping. I think that I really want to wait for a car that is still in its complete kit form. I heard they are great kits!!
You should be able to get ladders from Detail Associates, but I don’t know about the glue. You seem to be the sort that has a talent for re-habilitating things, so…
There is a Lambert brass boom car up on eBay right now…
There’s nothing wrong with GEM engines or cars. They go for less money than most brass because they are older pieces and the details are usually below par with current brass. They tended to be well built and nice items. If you have the talent to change details like ladders, etc you can make very nice cars & engines from them for the cost of some brass detail parts.
The engines were usually very tough mechanisms and the only problem today is the lack of a can motor. The details were crude and often lacking on them which is easy to correct. Many early engines did not have standard items we expect today on brass like brake shoes, ropes for bells & whistles, brake gear and cab interior details/backheads.
Personally, I’d rather have an old GEM, Custom Brass or PFM engine than the low quality “Prestige Series” from Sunset. They have many substandard quality parts and wear out very fast compared to the older stuff.
