First one I ever saw on Ebay.

If you wait long enough, EVERYTHING and anything will be on eBay!

Hmmm. “Most powerful engine in the Southern Hemisphere, even outdoing the Big Boy.” I’d be curious to see the figures behind that claim. After all, the Southern did away with locomotives with a tender tractor because coal and water consumption decreased tractive effort: on a Garratt, the heaviest part of the engine seems to be suspended over unpowered wheels!

WSM used to make an American-themed “what-if” Garrett in HOn3: they had a whole line of freelance brass models.

8500: --you start the first bid, while I go and try to sell my car !! Now that is some piece of machinery ! ! I’ve seen photos of Garrats before but not in this configuration, what a monster ! ! guess we better strart thinking worldwide when it comes to different looking locomotives. Just when will we see this in plastic??? har har

Never cared for Garrats much. I guess I am another spoiled American. If it had 200,000 pounds of tractive effort and produced 7,000 horsepower, then the result might justify the looks, but it didn’t. I like big, powerful locomotives, and the rest of the world just didn’t get on board. Look up their rail weights and you can see one big issue. The Garrat has never been made that a lot of US prototypes couldn’t drag around. With all those parts and sections, it just seems like they should have had more umph.

There is an RTR model of this loco due for release later this year, at around $US600. I think that the claim that it could out-haul a Big Boy might be pushing it.
