I have been running my AC-4, on DCC using an Easy DCC decoder. I am impressed with loco, the low speed and excellent pulling power. This loco forced me to replace all my No 4 points (Peco small radius), with No 6 Micro Engineering points.
It would consistently derail when traversing the No 4’s, and looked ridiculous with gross overhang. Now it looks much better, and when coupled a passenger train, about 6 cars, no, it looks great. (I have 30” min curves)
Thanks
Greg
I have only run my AC4 on DC, using the DC Master Control module, on a test track. Its hard to tell what the pulling power is like, with out a load. One thing that did bother me, was the sound system, in particular the whistle. When you first press the whistle button it starts out with a fairly normal sounding whistle sound, then a half a second later, shifts to a higher tone. It doesn’t sound like any SP whistle I ever heard. I asked Broadway Limited about it, and they said they tested a couple other AC4’s at the shop…and they all sounded that way. Looks like I will be upgrading to a Tsunami system.
I run strictly DC at home and have not used the whistle yet. My home layout has 30 inch radius main lines and I have been using No. 4 Picos and have not had much difficulty coming through them on passing sidings with my AC-5. I have just finished a staging yard with all Pico No. 6’s and will eventually convert to all No. 6’s throughout. On the other hand, I only run my AC-5 for show on my home layout which is the SP 1909 Klamath Falls Branch and the largest Locomotive I have for that era is a TW-2, 4-8-0.
I will be operating my new AC-5 on a modular club RR pulling reefer blocks. In the past, using an original run BWL AC-4, we were pulling 34 PFE reefers of various makes with ease on level track.
I run my loco on DC and am unhappy with the sound system. I am unable to get the exhaust chuff to operate reliably or consistently and the sound quality is poor with lots of static noise. BL tech help have been really good trying to sort it out and are sending a replacement reed switch for the one on the unit.
The loco’s performance is excellent so if I can’t fix the sound system I was thinking of converting it to QSI. What would people recommend Tsumani or QSI?
Cheers
Philip
I purchased two cab forwards and I am very happy with both of them. These Cab Forwards have alot of detail, run smooth, nice to run at slow speeds as well as higher speeds with plenty of power.
