Build Custom N Scale Layouts

I was wondering if anyone builds custom n scale layouts. I’m looking to buy a custom n scale layout with everything execpt buildings which I already have. As far as size I was thinking around 3X6 or 7’. If anyone is intersted please contact me. Oh and what would a layout like that roughly cost.

I don’t build layouts professionally but am always ready for a challenge!

Who ever builds you a layout will need to know more than just size. I have a small N scale layout that is 30" x 48" with another 30" x 40" extension in an ‘L’ shape. I will be looking for a home for this layout sometime in the near future. Feel free to contact me if interested.

Check out Woodland Scenic’s stuff. They sell kits for just this purpose and Atlas makes track packs made just for the WS kits that include everything you need.

After that all you need is your powerpack, trains, and buildings and your off!

There is also the terrain for trains modules that you just add track, trains and buildings to, but the plans don’t do much for me. There are a lot of custom builders out there, though, just buy a Model Railroader magazine and look through the ads. I spotted at least three in the last issue.

gbialas, are you looking for a kit to build a layout, or are you looking for a finished layout, set up and ready to run?

There are lots of layout builders listed in the hobby press, as skiloff pointed out. They will custom-build to your specifications, but it gets expensive, no matter what scale.

A large part of the fun in model railroading is building everything yourself. Starting off with a kit as suggested by pcarrell is an easy method. Do some research on what’s available. Aside from the Woodland Scenics website, you can get a lot of information from Tony’s Trains (www.tonystrains.com)and from Loy’s Toys (www.loystoys.com), both good places for information and service.

Keep us posted of your progress.

To have a custom layout that size built will probably run you around $1,500 to $2,000. I dabble in building them myself for people localy. Unless you just dont have time to build one or have the money to burn, I would just pick up the Woodland Senics N scale Scenic Ridge kit. Since you already have the buildings, it would only cost you about $350 or less for the WS kit and the track pack. If you have the time its a big savings over what the cost to have one built for you and something you have built yourself always has more sentimental value to you.
