thanks staff for video have great xmas in the railroad
Another great project model RR. Great Job!
The Virginian is a beautiful layout. It kind of reminds me of the Appalachian Central that yall built back in 2000. What ever happened to the Appalachian Central layout?
The Virginian was the greatest little, big railroad ever. Their motive power was massive and varied, which first drew Virginian to my attention. The the more you learn, the more you appreciate. I am thrilled you based this project on the Virginian. You have captured the look, and it appears you have even developed an operational scheme that will hold interest in this 4x8 layout for years. Great Job!
This is just a great little layout
What a great series of articles to discover in 2012. I really hope to start the first module of my own layout that year, and I’m sure your Virginian project will help me to avoid some mistakes.
Many thanks in advance to the whole team.
Will there be a part in the future of maybe DCC being used or not?
The desktop photo (downloadable) for this project is priceless. You feel like you’re looking at (hopefully) your own layout from a few inches away.
Wish we could all drop the 4’x8’ layout basis in favor of shelf layouts. The same amount of plywood will give your more of everything. THEN add staging or cassettes and you are A-team for operations AND appearance.
Judging by the interest so far, you guys should do a soft cover book on just this project railroad, with a history and background of the Virginian thrown in…
Any chance we will see the track piece list before the March issue come out? I would like to buy the track now and beginworking on it before the issues come out.
I have decided this will be my first railroad layout I’ll build
I am going to build this layout with my son as our first layout together and my first one in over 25 years (had to do that time in the Navy!)
Looking forward to more info on this and more of the videos for this layout as well. Are there any more detailed info on track used etc I can get?
I really like this layout and am going to do it but instead of HO, I plan on going N scale and working with 3x5 on the dimensions. I am not just going 1/2 of this and using 2x4. I figure that the larger size will enable larger curves and more scenery area.
I am also not doing the branch as my “right of way” agreement doesn’t allow for more expansion in that direction, but the staging will continue longer and then around a corner for 7 feet more. Using 12" wide shelf techniques, I will bring it right next to my desk/work bench.
My first grandson is just hitting 1 year old and I used that argument to get the corner of the entertainment room. You do what you have to!
I will document the whole process and maybe write it up as a addendum to this project.
john.king@mac.com Thanks for being here for us all.
This has been a beautiful presentation teaching me how to build a model railroad. I have always wanted to model coal operations near my hometown ‘long story’. I bought the big yellow Virginian book and was immediately hooked. I do not have much space so I accept the challenge of building a railroad in 1x5 feet. I will take lots of pictures too.
A softcover book with extra material sounds like a great idea
I also agree with Dennis Rao. The downloadable plan isn’t much help at all.
Great layout that I plan to build. However, I have my table and three inches of foam built. I don’t want to cut up the table. Can I use Woodland Senics risers and incline system to duplicate the grade rather than the wood incline construction? Also, a detailed track plan would be helpful.
This is a nice layout, but the vidoes they donot show much of anything to be useful, but they are great little diary of what happen at each step. I guess this is for the reader to do the research and dream on what they want to do…I see this as an guide to that end…
Please make non flash videos for my iPhone and iPad. Get with the times. Thanks. Great ideas from this little layout. Please show how the staging cassette attaches to the layout.
